Crash course on raising boys  Oct 23, 2006
Simply titled Your Boy, author Vicki Courtney's book takes the reader on a wild ride into the world of boys. For this fasten-your-seat-belt journey, she urges moms to do their part in rearing godly boys in an ungodly world. Courtney hammers home that boys grow up before we know it, so it's best to equip them at every stage with the tools they will need to grow into godly manhood.

From Hot Wheels to hormones, the author mentions her own trials and triumphs in bringing up two sons to be godly in a world saturated with sex. Founder of Virtuous Reality Ministries, Courtney is not bashful about revealing the moral impurities infiltrating the most unsuspecting places. "[A]s mothers, we (need to) rest in the settled peace...that our sons are always under (His) watchful eye."

A mom's sphere of influence is huge but is not meant to be polluted with manipulation, like Rebekah did with Jacob (in the Old Testament) to carry out her own schemes. Courtney offers a contrasting biblical example: "Hannah knew better than to think that Samuel belonged to her."

Perhaps the author attempted to cram too much between the covers of this book, like encouraging moms not to diminish their high calling by coddling their sons; add to that the mission to rear their boys in godliness. Toss in, yet, a crash course on surviving a sex-obsessed culture, and she may have had material for several volumes. All the more reason, perhaps, for moms busy rearing their boys to get this much for the price of one! - Cheryl A. Cecil, Christian Book
A MUST read for all mothers with boys!!!  Aug 29, 2006
I could not put this book down! Vicki Courtney gives very practical and useful advice and information that you can start using right away. Some things that called to my heart were a scripture verse that is now part of my daily prayers, checklist on how to raise nice guys, ways to respond to encourage growth, and tips on how to model a virtuous woman for my boys. Vicki includes real life stories from her own experiences with her two boys and she does so in such vivid details. This book is one you will tag, highlight, and refer to again and again. I just can't say enough good things about this book. It is a MUST READ for every mother trying to raise her boy in this UnGodly world!
Great Advice  Jul 18, 2006
"Your Boy, Raising A Godly Son In An UnGodly World," is a must have for all mom's who love their sons. The author of this outstanding work, Vickie Courtney, is certainly well qualified and knowledgeable and you can with confidence utilize the information you will find within the pages of this book knowing you are helping your son grow into the man he should be.
Written from an evangelical Christian perspective you will feel as if you are being delivered a glass of cool water as she takes you from infancy to adulthood in your quest to raise a Godly son.
Many fears and turmoil's that you are facing or will face as your child grows are addressed in this book and you are given sound guidelines to follow to help you steer you child in the right direction.

Her suggestions are well researched and written in an easy flow making it simple to understand and implement in your own life as you continue on with your job as a mom. Some of the subjects she covers are; Offering your son advice regarding a future mate; Surviving a Sex-Obsessed Culture; and my favorite, "How not to raise a 'momma's boy." Where was this book years ago when some of the people I know could have benefited from it; including myself? Her writing style is free and easy almost bringing you right into her life as she shares stories, examples and just plain life to help you understand her points. Not only will you find yourself relating to many of the circumstances but you might just have a giggle or a tear along the way. Great book; great advice for Christians and non-Christians alike who truly would like to raise a boy to become a true man.
Timely, powerful, and prophetic  Jun 26, 2006

Vicki Courtney is a best selling author and national speaker. She writes from her heart. "Your Boy" is a common sense book on parenting from a Christian perspective. The author generously uses Biblical illustrations and references to develop guidelines on raising boys to becoming Godly men. God's absolute standard as exemplified by Daniel and his friends, Gideon, and David in Old Testament Scriptures become models for godliness.

Courtney shares from her own family life experiences. Sons, Ryan and Hayden, become the focus of Vicki's challenge for raising godly sons in an ungodly world. The book takes us on a journey from the hospital delivery room to college entrance applications. The author also has incorporated insights from her years of ministering to youth and young adults. By opening up and sharing her most embarrassing moments and hardest lessons in Mothering she has made herself vulnerable and proven herself genuine. Courtney is a natural communicator. She often uses humor to emphasize a point. The book is fast paced, informational, and entertaining. The research is well documented, providing the reading with recommendations for additional reading and study.

Although the book is primarily addressed to mothers, dads can get new insights on parenting and can benefit from reading the book and openly discussing the principles with their wives and sons. The chapters on hormones, pornography, instant messaging, and chat rooms alert the reader of current trends and worldly standards among our teens. I personally found the information on the media generation and the online safety tips especially helpful. The chapter titled "Manhood, Masculinity, and Marriage Redefined" is filled with important data for men and women alike. The section on raising your son to be a spiritual leader is a reminder to every dad of the importance of his role as father. The formula provided for finding a virtuous wife provides a valuable tool for insuring careful, prayerful insight from father to son.

This is a book written for mom's of boys, preschool - college. It is a book that should be in the hands of church youth pastors, and Christian school administrators.

This book is timely. It is a wake up call to Christian parents and to the Church. The message is powerful and prophetic.

Practical Parenting Advice   Jun 7, 2006
* Did you know that children from ages eight through eighteen are referred to as "Generation M?" Can you guess why?

* Did you know that a study completed in 2001 revealed that 55% of American eleventh graders have had sexual intercourse?

* Do you know what Xanga and Myspace are?

If you are a mother and you answered "no" to any of these questions, you'll want to read Your Boy.

Even though Courtney frequently discusses the roles fathers play in their sons' development, this book is clearly addressed to mothers. Courtney acknowledges that, particularly in the early years, mothers are the primary formative influence on their children. Also, since 18% of American children live in households led by single or divorced females, it is safe to assume that, in many cases, mothers carry the bulk of the responsibility for child rearing in American society.

Writing from an evangelical Christian perspective, Courtney addresses a range of issues covering the entire span of boyhood from infancy to adulthood. Do you want to raise a Mama's Boy? Courtney discusses the harmful effects of over protectiveness. Do you want to raise a boy who treats women with courtesy and respect? Courtney provides "A Nice Guy's Dating Rules." Do you want to know what your children are doing when they are online? Courtney provides advice about monitoring computer usage and recommends specific software that assists in that task.

The book is generally written and organized well, but one glaring editorial error will leap out at the reader. In chapter 8, "Surviving a Sex-Obsessed Culture," Courtney promises to address three "basic assumptions that Christian mothers make prior to (or during) the teen years" (p. 105). I was disappointed when she only discussed two assumptions. I have searched the book cover to cover and failed to find the third one. Otherwise, this is one of the most compelling chapters of the book. The subsequent chapter, "Staying in Line When Online" is also helpful. These two chapters alone make the book worthwhile.

The least persuasive part of this book deals with what Courtney calls "the assault on biblical manhood" (p. 157). She traces the roots of atrocious manners and extended adolescence to the sexual revolution and radical women's liberation movement of the 1960s. Citing the differences between issues of Seventeen that were published in the 1950s and recent issues of that magazine, she portrays the 1950s and earlier decades as a somewhat ideal age when Christian values dominated the American landscape. Courtney believes that a reversion to "traditional" gender roles as they are usually defined and promoted by evangelical Christians will go a long way toward curing the ills of American society in general, as well as those of American families in particular.

Courtney, a mother of three teenagers and the founder of a ministry called Virtuous Reality, has written several books for women and teens. The counterpart to Your Boy is entitled, Your Girl Raising a Godly Daughter in an Ungodly World. She is a clear, concise writer who utilizes a fairly good range of research materials. Your Boy will appeal to parents who agree with an evangelical Christian worldview. Even so, the book offers practical advice for all parents, regardless of their particular religious or philosophical leanings.

By the way, Generation M stands for Generation Media. Read the book to find out what it means!
