Item Description...
As early as autumn 2006, surreal and hilarious video clips of Stephen Walker's documentary (which originally aired on the BBC) were making the rounds on YouTube and in email inboxes all over the U.S.--tantalizing, out-of-context glimpses of the Young@Heart vocal choir, composed of elderly men and women, having a go at chestnuts by Sonic Youth, the Clash, and the Ramones. It seemed that the feature film, re-released for the screen in 2008, would perhaps be an uncomfortably comic look at a bunch of geezers set up to look ridiculous for the smug delectation of hipster audiences everywhere. The reality is not so far off-base, at least on first glance, but Walker's film, tracking the progress of the chorus as they prepare for a big gig, provides enough good-natured humor, personal narrative, and intimate details to inspire respect and admiration--and some major heart-string-plucking--in filmgoers. Viewers witness the blossoming of long-buried or completely latent musical talents in the elderly folks; learning the new, unfamiliar material, under the direction of irascible 50-something conductor Bob Cilman, keeps their neurons firing and their emotions kindled, while communing with and trusting each other staves off the isolating effects of old age, even as they cope with heartbreaking losses within their ranks. It is undeniably funny to watch them struggle with the more challenging punk, classic rock, and soul songs as their leader kvetches wearily, but Walker skillfully ensures that, by the end of the film, we are laughing with the intrepid Young@Hearters, and not at them.

A documentary of aged singers remaining young...  May 3, 2010
This film is a documentary of a group of singers with an average age of... 80. They've toured the US and Europe, and their repertoire includes modern, pop, and rock songs.

And, unfortunately, because of their age, their mortality is much more of a consideration than with probably any other performing group on the planet. Two die in the 8 weeks covered by this film.

It is the energy, however, of these singers and performers, that drives this picture. They don't have the flash, the moves, nor the pizzaz of a 25 year old performer for American Idol. But they love to perform, and it shows.

This is not an action movie. You will wonder just what kind of performance results when some of the singers have difficulty remembering their solos of two lines, and walk across the stage with a cane, and with difficulty. When their physical condition keeps them from practicing. When their swan song, quite literally, can be their final song.

But they live to sing, and singing makes them live. This film captures this passion well.
Like Sugar and Spice  May 1, 2010
I wasn't expecting much from this documentary so was delightfully surprised when I found myself being drawn in and captivated as I watched this. I laughed and cried and had to watch it again the next day, which is something I rarely do. The story is a very endearing one, and the stories of the individual choir members are touching. I came away genuinely fond of these folks. The music videos are a real hoot. They're very well done. I had to go on line to watch other clips that weren't in the documentary. ("Road to Nowhere" and "Staying Alive" are especially fun.) One can't help but be moved while watching the faces of the inmates during the performance of "Forever Young" in the prison courtyard. I wish they would do a follow up documentary, though sadly several of the original choir members have since passed away. (There is a video clip on line of David Byrne joining the choir at a performance at a club in NYC in which they sing "Heaven." This would make a great addition to a second film!) The way in which the film treats the deaths of two members during the making of the documentary is sensitive and touching. I came away from this feeling rejuvenated, hopeful and entertained. Check it out. You'll Feel Good!

I decided to buy and give that DVD to my sister after I saw it with Netflix. I like that movie a lot.

This show is uplifting, touching, and it rocks. If you love the elderly and rock'n roll this DVD is for you.
Young at Heart  Mar 24, 2010
I watched this with my husband, and we were both enthralled with the characters. It is a bittersweet movie that should not be missed by anyone. It helps young people appreciate seniors and it is inspiration to older people. I purchased it to give to my 90 year old father and 85 year old mother. I know they will love the movie as much as I did.
