On a mission to solve a 43-year-old mystery for the sheriff's department in Bisbee, Arizona, the author recalls his family's past treasure seeking ventures. He visits the property where some old human remains were found buried in jars. He recalls where the idea had come from of a buried treasure on the property where he was born. His research takes him back to the 1860s, to the adventures and perils of his grandfather, John Henry Hughes, and his great-grandfather, Jesse. They find a treasure and then lose it to three thieves. John Henry makes a lasting promise to find a treasure for his father. While looking for a treasure in Kansas, he meets Wyatt Earp. Wyatt tells him where he can find four treasures in Arizona. John Henry moves to Bisbee, and buys the O.K. Livery business. He finds the Wells Fargo strongbox that contained the loot stolen off the 1882 Bisbee stage in a cave under the stables. Later that night, he ends up in a hangman's noose.
On a mission to solve a 43-year-old mystery for the sheriff's department in Bisbee, Arizona, the author recalls his family's treasure seeking ventures. He visits the property his parents once owned where some old human remains were found buried in jars. He recalls where the idea of a treasure that was buried on the property originated. His research takes him back to the early 1860s, to the adventures and perils of ten-year-old John Henry Hughes and his father, Jesse. After uncovering a treasure outside of Yorktown, Virginia, they lose the treasure to three thieves. Devastated by the loss, Jesse threatens to kill himself. John Henry pleads with Jesse not to kill himself and makes a lasting promise to his father that he will find a treasure for him. While treasure-seeking in Kansas, John Henry meets Wyatt Earp. Later in Colorado, Wyatt confides in John Henry and tells him where he can find four treasures in Arizona. After several years of trying to buy or rent the four properties, John Henry rents the O.K. Stables in Bisbee. Inside the stables, he finds the Wells Fargo lock that points the way to where he finds the first of four treasures. Two disgruntled former employees, along with a notorious outlaw, return to harm John Henry. He ends up in a hangman's noose with the noose getting tighter and tighter around his neck.
