Healing Words  Aug 18, 2008
Wounded by Words should be read by every minister and counselor who then should require their clients to read it. This book is neither preachy nor condemning, rather it is embracing and freeing to all who have suffered abuse in its many forms. It gives hope for healing. The "Reflections" at the end of each chapter lend themselves to personal inquiry as well as a catalyst for group discussion. An excellent contribution toward the goal of freeing women from the prison of abuse.
It's Not a Woe is Me book  Jul 17, 2008
As I read through this book I found stories that I could relate to. The authors' candor and wise words along with scripture and poetry make this a valuable read.

Wounded by Words isn't a pity-party book; there are explanations for the difficult behaviors people dish out, and tips for the victims on how to deal with abusive patterns or personality disorders. This is a solid book written by skilled authors and I recommend it.

An excellent resource for identifying and revealing the emotional and verbal abuse found within and outside the church  Jul 14, 2008
Susan Titus Osborn, Karen Kosman and Jeenie Gordon tell their personal accounts of being victims of emotional abuse as children by various family members. Each story is intense and powerfully depicted, and readers will find themselves engaged (and enraged) by each one.

Told in both first person and third person points of view, the authors take turns sharing their own journeys toward emotional health and how they each discovered that they were not to blame for the ill treatment exacted upon them. Though their life paths have been up and down because of their rocky beginnings, all three now stand on the opposite side of the victim fence and offer a solid resource of hope and help to countless men, women and children.

In this 12-chapter text, interested observers or individuals who suffer silently from emotional abuse in their adult relationships will learn from others' stories of trial and triumph on topics such as these: the power of words as lethal weapons meted out to control and dominate others; how verbal abusers isolate, disorient and indoctrinate their victims (usually family members); how the abused often lack confidence and have distorted images of themselves; how to recognize the tell-tale signs of abuse, which might include reclusive behavior and poor decision-making; how breaking the cycle requires understanding the deeper underlying issues; when physical personas begin to reveal the inner turmoil; learning how to break the cycle of abuse and laying a new solid foundation in Christ and His promises; setting appropriate boundaries against further abuse; and engaging in fresh opportunities for new growth by understanding God's faithful care and presence.

Throughout the text, there are inspirational poems and stories as told by numerous men and women from across all economic, social and religious backgrounds. Many of these accounts of emotional abuse are inflicted by close family members such as parents or spouses. However, there are also stories of those who suffered from church authorities, employers, teachers and other non-family individuals. What may strike readers most is how frequently the abused fail to recognize that they are being manipulated by another until either a crisis occurs or someone from outside the situation intervenes and calls attention to the problem.

Readers will appreciate the candor and honesty as told by the authors. Clearly, they understand that of which they write, and people will find practical measures to take to remove themselves from continuing the cycle of abuse from every vantage point. WOUNDED BY WORDS is an excellent resource for identifying and revealing the emotional and verbal abuse that, sadly, is found as much in the church as outside of it.

If you are Christian, this book is for you!  Jul 10, 2008
I bought this book initially because I had been emotionally abused as a child, or - wounded by words, as the book is titled. Had I known it was so filled with scripture verses and prayer, I might not have been so quick to buy it. Most of the people who were abused in the authors' book turned to God for comfort, yet I was afraid and angry with God since I associated him with my father, whom I saw as God at the time. Also, the book is better suited for married couples.

Still, there is much to be said for the solutions portion of the book, about setting boundaries, loving yourself, and finding a new life for yourself. All in all it is a good book to help people who are trying to grieve and get through the ravages of emotional abuse.
Words Do Hurt Us  May 15, 2008
Through stories about real people, Wounded by Words alerts readers to abusive situations. Perhaps a woman never questioned the responsibility heaped upon her shoulders as a child. A man may have thought a teacher had the right to call him disparaging nicknames. Adults may take for granted the unkind words of a spouse or an employer. Readers may recognize themselves in the stories, which make up a large part of the book, and will also learn of the damage such experiences cause. Far too often, the authors say, the abused become abusers.

Authors Susan Titus Osborn, Karen L. Kosman and Jeenie Gordon are well qualified to write this book. All three experienced emotional abuse in their youth and married men who also battered their self esteem. Jeenie is a licensed marriage and family therapist while Susan and Karen are inspirational speakers and writers who find their stories resonate with women everywhere. Poems express the heart cries of those who suffer.

But these authors write far more than stories. They offer insightful comments and practical suggestions for setting boundaries and confronting those who wound us with words. Parents will learn effective survival skills to teach children being bullied. And each chapter includes scriptural stories of abuse that offer hope. With God's help, lives can change. Readers are encouraged to be honest about themselves and their situations through thought-provoking, end-of-chapter "Reflections."

Read this book if you're wondering whether interpersonal problems today may be caused by events of the past. "Depression, behavioral problems, and physical illnesses are often direct outcomes of emotional abuse--often resulting in invisible scars," state the authors. Read this book if you're seeking guidance to handle verbal abuse or if you feel angry or find yourself saying things you regret. And even if you don't experience abuse in your own life, this self-help book will better prepare you to minister to those who do.
