"Would the Real Church Please Stand up!" is a must read for all Christians, not just for the clergy. I encourage people of a secular worldview or other religions to read it too, to help understand the extra pressure that helps keep a Christian woman trapped in an abusive marriage. It's an excellent resource on how we can make a difference. Far too often Christians and church folk simply do not get it. They do not understand what a Christian woman who lives with an abuser goes through on a daily basis. Ms Greenfield's book is an excellent resource to bridge this gap. There are examples of abuse from the author's own experience, lists of tactics abusers use against those they have vowed to love and cherish, checklists to help a woman know if she is being abused, Bible verses on the subject, an escape checklist, and ideas on what people can do to make a difference.

By sharing her own experience, Susan Greenfield shows us where the church is and is not rising to the challenge of handling the complex issues and beliefs surrounding domestic violence. She brings scripture to bear on the subject, so Christians can drop their stereotypes and align their beliefs with what the Bible teaches. A concept that is well known and taught among Christians is that God hates divorce. But Susan alerts us to the rest of the passage, that God hates a man being violent to his wife, which is breaking faith and behaving treacherously toward her. She points out that both adultery and violence violate the marriage covenant. Indeed, the church needs to take violence as seriously or even more seriously than adultery, because violence can kill and be perpetuated into the next generation.

My favorite chapter was "What Can the Church do to Help?" From my own experiences, I am guessing most of the time church people do nothing and do not bother to educate themselves about domestic violence because they think there is nothing they can do, and that it is a field for experts and church leaders only. They do not realize that in helping a battered woman and her children they are actually doing mission work and helping to make sure the next generation will be more likely to follow Jesus and to not commit violence or allow violence in their own families. When church people fail in the mission God has given them to help deliver people from oppression, their testimony--and even the character of God--can be viewed as tarnished in the eyes of those who are desperate for help, and a woman and her children may decide God does not love them and cannot be relied upon. I, too, have met several women who have stopped going to church because the church both abandoned and blamed them when they were the victims of a harsh and violent abuser. This must stop. It is indeed time for the REAL church to stand up!

One of a Kind Resource for Battered Christian Women  Dec 14, 2007
I think the best review I can give "Would the Real Church Please Stand Up! by Susan Greenfield, is to post a copy of an email I sent to another domestic violence worker concerning this very excellent book.

Below is a copy of that communication:

"Dear ____ , I have found a book I will be sending you for consideration as a domestic violence resource for your outreach to the Christian Churches.

I just ordered it, and will be forwarding it to you. It was released this year. The author, domestic violence survivor, Susan Greenfield, had to make a hazardous escape, and then survive on her own with a toddler and a baby. She spent quite a bit of time in a shelter. Her Church was unsupportive of her and supportive of her batterer (sound familiar?).

I will be posting the book on The Dorcas Network site as a resource. It had an incredible emotional impact on me as she chronicled her experiences. But it is also very practical. The book gives a first hand look at what a battered Christian wife goes though (her batterer was, and still is, a youth minister at the church they attended together). She details exactly what abuse is (as you know, so many do not have a clue), and then she goes on to tell the church, in great detail--from a battered wife's perspective, exactly how Christians can be a real support to the battered wives within their congregations. I honestly do not think there is another book like it." ~~jocelyn
