Item Description...
Times change, but God's principles of prayer are timeless. That's why With Christ in the School of Prayer is as alive today with power as when first written more than a century ago. Andrew Murray reminds us that only when the Church gives herself up to the holy calling of intercession - a calling that Christ Himself ever lives to perform - can we expect the power of Christ to be manifested on the Church's behalf.

Book Description
This classic book views prayer not as drudgery or a way to win favor with God, but as a means of communing with the Creator--and seeing lives changed.

More About Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray South African pastor and author Andrew Murray (1828 1917)was an amazingly prolific writer. Murray began writing on the Christian life for his congregation as an extension of his local pastoral work, but he became internationally known for his books, such as With Christ in the School of Prayer and Abide in Christ, that searched men's hearts and brought them into a deeper relationship with Christ. With intense purpose and zeal for the message of the gospel, Murray wrote numerous books even after his "retirement" at age seventy-eight.

Andrew Murray was the second child of Andrew Murray Sr. (1794–1866), a Dutch Reformed Church missionary sent from Scotland to South Africa. Andrew Murray was born in Graaff Reinet, South Africa.

Andrew was sent to Aberdeen in Scotland for his initial education together with his elder brother, John. Both remained there until they obtained their master's degrees in 1845. From there, they both went to the University of Utrecht where they studied theology. The two brothers became members of Het Réveil, a religious revival movement opposed to the rationalism which was in vogue in the Netherlands at that time. Both brothers were ordained by the Hague Committee of the Dutch Reformed Church on 9 May 1848 and returned to the Cape.

Murray married Emma Rutherford in Cape Town, South Africa, on 2 July 1856. They had eight children together (four boys and four girls). Religious work in South Africa.

Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860.

In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day.

Andrew Murray was born in 1828 and died in 1917.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A great month-long devotional journey  Aug 19, 2005
I am a pastor, and I have been using this book in my devotional life. I began on the first day of August, and have read one chapter per day. The reading for each day is short enough to not be a burden, but meaty enough to give me plenty to think about. Each chapter ends with a prayer which I have made my own. This book really is "a school" of prayer: I'm now on day 19, and I can truly say that I have learned lots and my prayer life has deepened. Even as a pastor with seminary training, I have been challenged by this book. It is a classic that speaks on many levels, and I imagine that I will take this journey again in subsequent years. I heartily recommend this book to anyone, clergy or lay, who wants a stronger prayer life.
A Foundational Book on Prayer!  Aug 19, 2004
The principles on this Murray book by Whitaker, I have used extensively!! Thank God that Whitaker House keeps printing books written by Andrew Murray! If it were not for Whitaker House publishing their books, we would not have Murray books to share with others (as well as study ourselves). All five of my Andrew Murray "Believer's Secret" books, published by Bethany House Publishers are out of print.

Charles Finney and Andrew Murray wrote the best books on the Holy Spirit, Prayer, Revival, and Holiness that I have ever read. You cannot go wrong buying any Murray books published by Whitaker House! So I say again, thank God for Whitaker House!

I believe those of you who enjoy Finney and Murray will also enjoy "Prayer Steps to Serenity," which teaches truths that I learned from studying Finney and Murray for many years. The book follows a 12 Steps and Serenity Prayer format. It is available through this site, with ISBN 0595313043. If you know of anyone who is looking for a 12 Step devotional that will help them walk in the power of the Holy Spirit according to the scriptures, you can heartily recommend this book to them. "Prayer Steps to Serenity" was not published by Whitaker House, and it is a larger than a trade paperback (a 9 inch by 6 inch paperback) that includes devotional readings, prayers to encourage you to keep on praying as the Holy Spirit leads, a personal Journey Guide (or workbook), and a Group Journey Guide for prayer and support groups. "Prayer Steps to Serenity" is also supported by two websites that offer a lot of free guides and resources for those seeking more information about Christian recovery and starting Serenity Groups. Go to or for more information.

Thank you for reading!

This book was written many years ago and yet its message is still as valid and beautiful as it was long ago. Jesus' teachings on prayer are closely examined and the life of a praying man or woman is shown for the powerful thing it really is! I'm 29 years old and have loved this book since age 14!
Should Be A Bible College Textbook  May 16, 2004
I bought this book while a sophmore in Bible college and it changed by life. I have read many books on prayer from Samuel Chadwick, Leonard Ravenhill, A.W. Tozer, Charles Spurgeon, John Wesley, and many others but Andrew Murray's books remain near the top. This book should be a required reading text for every disciple of Christ.

Murray's chapters are short, concise, and he fills your heart with a hunger for God's presence. While his writing style may be dated and his language archaic at times, Murray's passion for prayer shines through. He truly takes you to the school of prayer and leads you before the throne of Almight God.

If you love to pray, struggle with prayer, or want to learn the secrets of the saints of old who spread God's truth without technology but their voices and their Bibles then read Andrew Murray's classic works on prayer.

One of the best  Jan 29, 2002
I can honestly say that this book was used by the Holy Spirit to powerfuly afect my prayer life. It turned praryer time into a tender and powerful time. I do not think that this book will have the same impact on everyone, but if you like old authors like I do then please read this book. It is written by a man that spent much time in the closet and out of the closet with the Lord.
