The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is much better!  Dec 30, 1999
I found this "Essential Guide to Proverbs" to be inaccurate, intolerant and judgmental. Beasley's preface states "As in all the other Old Testament books, Christ reigns preeminent". Christ is not mentioned anywhere in Proverbs or the Old Testament. On page 559 Beasley attachs Catholics saying, "Today, the Roman Catholic Church has built up a huge body of tradition by which God's Word is erroneously augmented. For example they teach a place called 'purgatory,' which has no biblical basis." In the same paragraph he attachs Judaism's sacred oral tradition, the Talmud. Beasley is a graduate in Theology and this book is clearly an expose on his personal theology and has nothing to do with the original intent or meaning of the authors of Proverbs. For a more positive, accurate and in-depth scholarly study of Proverbs read THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. The comments are interesting and very readable, and they put things into a historical setting. The book includes many drawings and photos to give the reader a sense of the culture of the time plus 6 translations in parallel to aid understanding.
What a jewel for the Church!  Feb 24, 1999
I've just finished skimming your new work and am delighting in it. I've preached and taught Proverbs several times in the last 15 years and how I wish I'd had this in my hands then. The book fills a desperate need in the world of commentaries and study helps... it grabs the MEANING of each proverb, but then "preaches" it, giving exposition, illustration, and application. The Wisdom of Proverbs is a great service to God's people.
Wisdom of Proverbs is reverential, reformed, and relevant.  Feb 24, 1999
Bob Beasley provides us with a reverential, reformed, and relevant exposition of God's inerrant and infallible Proverbs. His book, The Wisdom of Proverbs, just may be God's tool to restore common biblical sense and holy living to our land. I am strongly recommending it to families who want a daily devotional guide, to pastors and teachers who need a research tool, and to every sincere seeker of truth who needs easy access through Bob's extensive index to the message of God that addresses our nagging anxieties, deep-seated fears, and pressing needs.
If I had only two books available, this would be the second.  Feb 24, 1999
If Proverbs is "the Ten Commandments in shoe leather," then Bob Beasley's book breaks in the shoes so that they can be worn daily.

I have long sought a way to break down the proverbs so that I could teach God's rules of life to my family on a regular basis. After looking through many book stores and asking various Christian leaders, I was relieved to find exactly what I was searching for.

The format is ideal for a five minute overview of the chapter or an in-depth Bible study covering several nights. The cross references to various scriptural examples and the prayer of application are especially helpful.

To discover all of this in a book that did not require a seminary background was indeed a treat. If I were stuck on an island with only two books available to me, this would be the second book.

An Excellent Commentary  Dec 4, 1998
"The Wisdom of Proverbs" is an excellent commentary by Bob Beasley, a businessman who is also a graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary. It is especially useful for personal and family devotions. Its layout is similar to a devotional magazine, with each page providing a separate reading on a verse or cluster of verses on a single theme. Each page has a title stating the principle taught in the verses, an exposition, and a prayer of application. Most pages also indicate several scriptural passages where the principle is exemplified. In some of the messages (not too many) the author's illustrations are drawn from his personal life, in some cases showing the consequences of his failure to obey the principle in the text. The expositions are true to Scripture and frequently relate to the Gospel of Grace. I warmly recommend "The Wisdom of Proverbs."
