Item Description...
One of the nation's most successful football coaches shares the story of his life, from his childhood and the forces that shaped him, to his military service and his career at Notre Dame and South Carolina.

Publishers Description

When I die and people realize that I will not be resurrected in three days, they will forget me. That is the way it should be. For reasons known only to God, I was asked to write an autobiography. Most people who knew me growing up didn't think I would ever read a book, let alone write one.

—Lou Holtz

Few people in the history of college sports have been more influential or had a bigger impact than Lou Holtz. Winner of the three national Coach of the Year honors, the only coach ever to lead six different schools to season-ending bowl games, and the ninth-winningest coach in college football history, Holtz is still teaching and coaching, although he is no longer on the gridiron.

In his most telling work to date, the man still known as "Coach" by all who cross his path reveals what motivated a rail-thin 135-pound kid with marginal academic credentials and a pronounced speech impediment to play and coach college football, and to become one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in history. With unflinching honesty and his trademark dry wit, Holtz goes deep, giving us the intimate details of the people who shaped his life and the decisions he would make that shaped the lives of so many others.

His is a storied career, and Holtz provides a frank and inside look at the challenges he overcame to turn around the programs at William and Mary, North Carolina State, Arkansas, and Minnesota. From growing up in East Liverpool, Ohio, to his early days as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa, to his national championship runs at Notre Dame and his final seasons on the sidelines in South Carolina, Lou Holtz gives his best, a poignant, funny, and instructive look into a life well lived.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Very interesting book...  Mar 2, 2007
...but not a great book. Therefore, I wouldn't rate it a 5* as most reviewers opined.

I didn't know that Lou was religious or even Catholic. Lou is a very humorous story teller. It tells how he got hired at all his post-college jobs. He tells of the story at Wm & Mary how Woodie Hayes offered him the defensive coord job at Ohio State and told Lou that he could have the head coach job once Woody retired. Lou wanted it in writing and the university apparently wouldn't do it, so Woodie told hime that when he retired he would retire in mid summer so the university would have no choice but to hire Lou as his replacement. Lou still had his doubts and didn't take the opportunity.

Lou also tells of the Eastern KY coach who called Lou after watching his Minnesota team play on TV, and asked him how he coach his huddles (Lou was big on snappy huddles). Lou asked him if the wanted to know anything about his offense or defense and the coach said no as he had watch the Gophers get clobbered on TV.

A example of living a successful life  Feb 17, 2007
A revealing, honest portrayal of a true legend. He doesn't always
take the easy way of doing things but he always strive to do the right thing. Should be required reading for ever teenager. His teaching methods results in how to be the best staying within the moral boundries
of life. If you want a book about life, faith, sports, wit & how to make the right decisions, this is a must read. Lou Holtz is the Yogi Beri of football.
