Item Description...
The extensive paintings of William Aiken Walker illustrate life in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, when cotten reigned. As a Southerner born to an Irish Protestant father and a South Carolinian mother, Walker grew up with a profound respect for the often-misunderstood cotton field worker. His painterly expressions document cultural and social conditions of the time, offering respect for the people themselves. With 157 color illustrations and fifty-eight black-and-white paintings and drawings, William Aiken Walker is a remarkable documentary of Walker's life as an artist and as a man.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
William Aiken Walker:Southern Genre Painter  Aug 8, 2008
Fairly good review of this artist's work from cultural and historical perspective but not from the artistic point of view.Representative sampling of his paintings as B&W and color photos but not a comprehensive listing. No indication of values and auction trends.
My copy had considerable water damage and many pages suffered damage when separated.Unsatisfactory buying experience from this site.
An ideal memorial tribute to a truly talented 19th century American artist.  Jan 6, 2008
William Aiken Walker was born in 1838 in South Carolina and grew up to become one the South's most gifted artists. After serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, Walker traveled and painted throughout the South. Then sold his paintings to tourists in cities such as New Orleans, Charleston, and the communities that dotted post-civil war Georgia. Known for his paintings of black Southerners, he was also noted for his lush and vivid landscapes. Now in a new and expanded edition from the Pelican Publishing Company, "William Aiken Walker: Southern Genre Painter" is an informed and informative history of his life and work, enhanced with the inclusion of 157 color illustrations and 58 black-and-white paintings and drawings. A welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library American Art History reference collections, "William Aiken Walker: Southern Genre Painter" is an ideal memorial tribute to a truly talented 19th century American artist.
