Item Description...
The summer Carol Keels arrived in Colombia, South America in 1971, she had visions of moving into a village of indigenous people, learning their language, translating the Bible into this language, writing primers and holdng large literacy classes and then setting back to watching the whole village be transformed by God's love. Four years later, the Keels still had no one even willing to help them learn the language. This is an engagaing, first person account of triumphs, discouragments, bats, and snakes. It is a life uncommon to most but the quiet faith, steadfast commitment and true courage of Carol's story makes it relatable to all. A common misconception is that missionaries are somehow more spiritual, more holy, and thus are put on a pedestal. Without Him, we are nothing, but in Christ, our life can be a great adventure if we step out of our comfort zone and into His plan for us. Whatever the challenge, daily life requires from all of us our faith and dependence on our Lord is we are to be victorious.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Disappointing missions book  Jul 31, 2008
I appreciate that Carol Martin has written about her experiences on the mission field. As a missionary, it is always interesting and insightful to hear about what others have been through. While I did not enjoy reading Martin's book, I know there are still insights to be gleaned from it.

I did not enjoy reading this book because of Martin's writing style and her attitude which often seemed bitter or condescending. This book is also different than all of the other mission biographies I have read because there is no happy ending and it seems Martin doesn't have anything to show for her years of work. I came away from the book discouraged.

If you are looking for a positive missions book, I would recommend the following:

It was disappointing that this book did not have more about what the title alludes to it being about. There are not many misconceptions described about wild Indians. Also the book is really sad in the end and shows how many people are not willing to love a person who is struggling with depression but simply opt for divorce. It also shows how missionaries can become so focused on the mission field they forget the greatest commandment is to love others(spouse included).
Wild Indians and Other Common Misconceptions  Dec 17, 2007
Very entertaining reading. Well written. Ms. Martin shares the trials and tribulations as well as the lighter side of Missionary life. I wondered all through the transcript if I would or could endure the hardships that field Missionaries live with. I think if you enjoy bats, snakes and insects, you would enjoy that life. One would have to be totally devoted to God's word to do it for so long. My wife and I are golf partners with Carol and Dwight Martin. Truly beautiful people. They will be moving from our area soon and we will certainly miss them. Delightful people.
Unexpected humor! Good read.  Nov 24, 2007
The biographical perspective expressed by Carol Martin in Wild Indians and Other Common Misconceptions captures a picture of the contemporary missionary and it's application to the 21st century Christian, especially those called to the mission fields.

Carol captivates us with her humorous approach to circumstances hard to navigate in uncharted waters, journeying without answers and lacking reassurance. The times of uncertainty brought out her faith and obedience to God's Word, so necessary in times of doubt, confusion and frustration. She learned to walk humbly before God.

Her experiences draw on Biblical truth, counselor principles and real life situations to achieve a connection to all age groups. It describes her relationship to a village tribe of Guayabero Indians in Colombia, South America and the misconceptions one can have until the truth is exposed. Her compassion and effort to live among learn and translate the Bible into their language created a tremendous challenge over a period of 17 years.

Carol's method of writing is refreshing, straightforward and entertaining. It will inspire future Christian missionaries to maintain a positive sense of humor and encourage them to depend on their strong faith and never-ending prayer throughout their journey. This book will also reach out to the unbeliever contemplating a decision when wrestling with the truth about Jesus.

A Must Read!  Nov 20, 2007
Wow! What an amazing read! It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me dream, and wish. I would recommend it to anyone, from the young to the old, from those who have found their way, to those who are still looking.
