Item Description...
While some apologists seek to provide convincing rational proof for the Christian faith, Joe Boot believes the best Christians can hope for is to show nonbelievers that it is reasonable for them to believe in Christ. This is because the Christian and the non-Christian come to the discussion with worldviews--sets of presuppositions--that are miles apart from each other, so there is little common ground on which to build an objective argument.

Instead, Boot invites nonbelievers to step inside the Christian worldview to see whether it provides satisfying answers to life's ultimate questions. Boot also steps into the non-Christian worldview, showing how it ultimately fails to make sense of the world. Whether you are a skeptic or a Christian seeking a relevant apologetic for our postmodern culture, you will benefit from this insightful and accessible book

Community Description
In Why I Still Believe, apologist Joe Boot provides a readable introduction to presuppositional apologetics for the average layperson. This approach assumes that the Christian and non-Christian come to the discussion of faith with worldviews - sets of presuppositions - that are miles apart, so that there is little common ground on which to build an objective argument of rational proof.

In this conversational survey of his own intellectual and spiritual journey, Boot invites the non-believer to step inside the Christian worldview to see whether or not it makes sense. Along the way he builds a coherent argument for the truth of Christianity. He also examines the non-Christian worldview, showing how it ultimately fails to make sense of the world.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Takes a presuppositionalist viewpoint  Mar 5, 2007
After hearing Joe Boot speak twice, and being impressed with his arguments and powerful presentation, I bought this book. I didn't realize that it takes a presuppositionalist viewpoint, since the arguments he made when I heard him speak were classical evidentialist arguments.

For those unfamiliar with the presuppositional approach, this approach strongly follows Cornelius Van Til. In contrast to evidential apologetics (which you might find in books by Lee Strobel, William Lane Craig, Gary Habermas, Josh McDowell, etc) presuppositional apologetics is based on the idea that the world is ultimately unintelligible unless viewed from a Christian worldview. Instead of offering, for example, historical arguments, presuppositional apologetics says that history is unintelligible without appeal to divine revelation. This explains the book's subtitle: "[Christianity is] the Only Way the World Makes Sense".

I can only speak for myself, but when I was an atheist (I am now Christian) I would not have found presuppositional apologetics very convincing. I would have found this sort of approach dogmatic at best, arrogant and offensive at worst. While I don't think it's fair to equate presuppositional apologetics with fideism, I don't think that this sort of approach will generally be convincing. I agree that the Christian worldview (properly understood) is the best worldview, but I don't think that declaring that fact is usually the best place to start when discussing matters of faith. Discussing various worldviews, yes. Stating outright that the Christian worldview is true and all others are bunk, no. That will likely result in your discussion partner closing themselves off from hearing anything else said during the discussion.

At this point it should be noted that Boot has been an apologist for many years with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM) and has lectured all over the world. He is clearly a smart guy, to say the least. So, the book is probably still worth a read, if only to understand the presuppositional argument. It also contains some interesting background information about Boot and how intellectual study sustained and strengthened his faith. For those reasons, I give the book three stars, even though I don't personally find its method of apologetics convincing.
