Publishers Description

From the author of the popular Million Dollar Mysteries and Smart Chick Mysteries comes a new stand-alone novel full of hidden staircases, buried secrets, and the promise of hope found in knowing God.

Miranda Miller wasn't looking for the news the day the letter came. But, trying to survive in troubled circumstances, she welcomes the chance to change her location for a period of time. The letter informs her that her grandparents' estate is finally about to become hers. She immediately heads down to Louisiana and the old house by the bayou. There Miranda finds secrets that lead to life-changing revelations.

This suspenseful story reminiscent of old Gothic tales has a complex mystery and a vivid sense of the Deep South. It shows how God can take the darkest circumstances and use them to light a bright path leading to the future.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Louisiana Story  Feb 18, 2008
This author has published two previous series--the Million Dollar and the Smart Chick Mysteries--both cast in sort of a lighter tone. With this novel, she has turned to a more serious and substantive theme, perhaps indicating a turn toward a more serious bent.

Set in the Louisiana Bayou area, the story brings us Miranda Miller, an art restorer at a Manhattan museum, the 32-year-old mother of a five-year-old daughter and wife of a promising architect. One day, she is beseeched to travel to the scene of her childhood home (which she left when she was five) by a dying Cajun caretaker who wishes to impart secret information to her before he passes away. Miranda has no memory of her first five years. The "aunt" who raised her tries to discourage Miranda, fearing the consequences of opening old wounds.

Thus lies a strange tale involving truths about the past, her family, her inheritance of the estate on which she grew up and most of all, Cajun history. It is a tale well told, with a heart-warming look at the foibles of human nature and the quest for understanding and the love of the Lord. Recommended.

Whispers of the Bayou grabs the reader.  Feb 18, 2008
Miranda Miller receives a summons to Louisiana from the caretaker of an estate she will inherit. Miranda remembers nothing of her time there as a child, nor the first few years of her life. Willy Pedreaux, the caretaker is dying, and he wants desperately to unburden himself to Miranda before he dies. Thus, ensues a journey for Miranda, not only to uncover what Willy must tell her, but to uncover the mysteries of her past.

Miranda stumbles into far more than she expected once she arrives at Twin Oaks. The mysteries of her past, of the secret Willy wants to unburden himself of, and the sometimes odd behavior of those she's trusted most in her life. Miranda finds even more than she hoped at the end of her investigations, not only solving the mysteries of her past, but learning to open herself up to a future even more promising than she'd hoped for.

WHISPERS OF THE BAYOU is a gripping read. I devoured this book because it was so difficult to put it down. I don't read a great deal of what is considered "Christian Fiction" but WHISPERS OF THE BAYOU isn't heavy-handed as some books in that genre. The characters are so well done that I cared what happened to them. Miranda is a great heroine, her journey not just to Louisiana, but to really know herself makes for a wonderful story. The mystery kept me intrigued and the twists and turns to the solution were most interesting. The history and culture of the Cajun people that is used throughout the book is fascinating and I could tell how much effort the author put into her research.

If you want a book that will grab you right from the first page and make you loathe any interruption while reading, then WHISPERS OF THE BAYOU is the book for you. Brava Ms. Clark!

Secrets of the Past  Feb 14, 2008
Miranda Miller thought she had her life together. She enjoys her job as an art restorer. She's married to a nice guy with a great 5 year old daughter. She's living life in the fast lane in New York City and loving it.

But all that changes on day. First, a man comes in with a painting he wants restored. Yet he seems more interested in a strange symbol on it then the painting itself. Then she is attacked while walking to meet her aunt for lunch. Yet the men leave her alone after examining her scalp.

As if that weren't strange enough, Miranda's Aunt Janet tells her that Willy Pedreaux wants to see her before he dies. Willy was the caretaker of Miranda's grandparent's estate in Louisiana. But Miranda hasn't been there since her mother died when Miranda was 5 years old. What secret could Willy possibly have to tell her? And will going back dredge up all kind of painful memories?

Mindy Starns Clark has quickly become a favorite author, so I was looking forward to reading this stand alone novel. It started out strong with plenty of questions, but then it stalled for about 100 pages or so. Fortunately, things picked up and the book became a race to the end. The characters were real right from page one, which helped me maintain my interest the whole way through. While a Christian novel, the Christianity wasn't as prevalent as normal. However, I found that plot thread believable and just right for this particular novel.

Overall, I did enjoy this novel. It is sure to please the author's many fans and anyone looking for a good mystery.

Psychological thriller fans will enjoy Mindy Stearns Clark's superb intense tale  Feb 14, 2008
Manhattan art restorer Miranda Miller knows she should rejoice in her life as she lives comfortably and her husband Nathan and Tess, their preschool daughter adore her; yet she feels depressed and though she tires to hide it tries to maintain a distance from her loved ones.

When she has an opportunity to get away from home for a while, she jumps at the chance. She rushes to Louisiana to go over with her Aunt Janet's lawyer the estate she will one day inherit from her. However, in New York where AJ as Miranda calls her has lived for three decades, her aunt worries about her niece returning home for the first time since the trauma that changed her life; the horror that her mind buried because the memories are too painful. Meanwhile someone else also wants to insure Miranda does not recall what she knows even willing to resort to murder to keep the past buried.

The key to WHISPERS OF THE BAYOU, a tense suspense thriller is Miranda whose inner soul battles between a need to know and a need for flight. The story line grips the audience from the moment that Miranda returns to the Bayou and never slows down as the tension mounts in anticipation of bad things happening to her, which of course they do. Psychological thriller fans will enjoy Mindy Stearns Clark's superb intense tale.

Another good book  Feb 9, 2008
Mindy Starns Clark has done it again! She weaves an intriguing story with the history and culture of the Cajun people. Her ability to draw the reader into the ambience of an area while building a whodunit plot never fails to capture the reader's interest from page one. Mix this with Christian overtones, and you have a great tale.

I did find, however, that book focuses more on the regional culture and mystery plot than it does on Christian themes and any one character's personal walk with God. Still, it is an entertaining read.
