Item Description...
In 1976, Don and Judy Cremer, and their two very young children, moved into a Christian commune in an inner-city district of Portland, Oregon. Participants in a risky outreach experiment, they expected to experience "all things in common" with their co-habitants. But suddenly thrust into a myriad of both personal and corporate struggles, they unexpectedly discovered the "uncommon"-and often miraculous-protection and provision of God. Coping with dangers and dilemmas, and developing discernment of the "winds of the Spirit"-without being blown away by "every wind of doctrine"-has produced an indelible imprint of spiritual maturity in their lives. Written with delightful candor and authenticity, Judy's memoir allows us a peek over her shoulder, taking us back in time 30 years. Her story is just as compelling and relevant for today, as she touches on the Vietnam War era, Ford's presidency, the birth of the New Monastic Movement. Born in Portland, Oregon, Judith Cremer returned there at age 19, after meeting and marrying her husband, Donald, in California. It was there, in the midst of the "Jesus Movement" revival of the 1970s, they experienced the events chronicled in this memoir. Following her career as a retail store manager and paralegal during the 1980s and 90s, she now relishes the slower pace of life in the Arkansas Ozarks. She and Don have four grown children and six grandchildren, and one of their favorite pastimes is traveling around the country visiting them. They enjoy renovating their historic home and remain occupied working with various local ministries. For many years Judith wrote a monthly column in her church's newsletter, and has led and formatted women's Bible studies. Judith has numerous essays and short stories to her credit, dealing with current events, women's interest and Christian growth. This is her first book.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Engaging/Groovy!  Jan 4, 2008
When I learned this book was about communal living, I wanted to read it to see just what would possess someone to do such a thing. Though a foreign idea to my world, I could easily see and feel what the author experienced as she detailed many of her experiences during their tenure at the Beth Israel home. Now it is easier to understand what can be learned, and avoided, by such arrangements. Many times I was laughing at the situations they found themselves in, such as the cake episode, and saddened by things such as having to hand over their paycheck. For sure, I have a great admiration for anyone who can, by choice, endure such arrangements. I would have been outta there in no time. This is a quick and engaging read.
BLOWN AWAY  Sep 10, 2007
Not only is this book an honest, straightforward telling of a life-changing experience that took place over a 10 month period, it is a compelling look into the complex workings of interpersonal relationships. Told with humor and clarity, this book is a real page turner. Ms. Cremer keeps you interested in what is happening to her. The narrative moves forward at a quick pace and never loses the voice of the person telling the story. Even though I am not a member of a Christian community, I could relate to her trying to balance wanting to live up to her Christian standards of behavior towards her house mates and family, and still maintain her personal dignity and self-respect. She was a very young (21) person at the time of this story and was learning huge life lessons in this unusual setting. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading engaging memoirs by sincere people who have a unique story to tell.
Lessons Learned  Jun 16, 2007
In this memoir, Judy allows you to see into her life and listen to her thoughts during a vunerable, yet fruitful time in her spirituality. She finds herself struggling to shake off the traditional methods of which she was raised in order to allow God to work in her life in a great new way. As her story unfolds, Don and Judy are used to help others become healed and strengthened through God's miracles. They sacrifice quite a bit on faith and recieve many blessings in return. This book is touching and truly insightful. I Loved it!
Which Way the Wind Blows  May 16, 2007
As Judith's husband I have to say I not only read the book, I lived it with her. She gives a real-life look at what kind of intense ministry can take place in community. With today's renewed interest in monastic and communal life, this book is a must read.
