Overview
Deep down you know it: There has to be more than singing songs on Sunday morning, handing out tracts at work or helping out at the soup kitchen. How do we integrate worship, evangelism and justice into our lives as a whole, rather than compartmentalizing all three? Mike Pilavachi wants to see all three elements come together! With humorous prose and fascinating stories, he shows how the natural outflow of worship is telling people about Jesus and compassionately helping them navigate the injustices of the world. We can't invite someone to church and ignore their physical needs; nor can we give out food at the local church pantry and disregard people's spiritual hunger. Says Pilavachi, "A life of passionate worship means feeding the hungry, standing up for those who suffer injustice...We must preach the gospel at all times, speaking and acting out God's love to a hurt and broken world."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A compassionate and faithful addition to evangelical Christian libraries  Aug 5, 2007
Written by Mike Pilavachi, the founder and leader of the Soul Survivor international movement, When Necessary Use Words: Changing Lives Through Worship, Justice and Evangelism is guide to how worship, evangelism, and justice can all be successfully melded into a transcendent whole in one's life. Chapters encourage the reader, preaching the importance of sustaining both physical and higher needs - that giving out food at the church pantry is just as crucial as nourishing people's spiritual hunger. A compassionate and faithful addition to evangelical Christian libraries and personal inspiration shelves.

Words of wisdom for clergy, worship leaders or church members  May 17, 2007
Mike Pilavachi, the founder of Soul Survivor, an international organization that empowers young people, writes a book that is both easy to read and challenging.

When Necessary Use Words discusses the connection between worship, evangelism and justice. Mike states emphatically that true worship will arise out of the Christian's life, and conversely that true worship has a tremendous impact on the daily life of the worshiper, both in how they talk about Jesus, and how they treat their neighbors.

The author makes his points with stories and humor rather than deep theological thinking. This makes the book readable for anybody in the church, lay or clergy. Don't be fooled by his casual style, Mike's work is biblically and theologically sound. He challenges the reader to make their whole life one that praises God. He takes a look at worship in the Bible as revealed by the Psalms, by the prophets, and by Jesus himself. He shows that authenticity and compassion are the hallmarks of worship. Mike also argues that God expects that justice will be part of worship. Compassion for God's people will lead not only to striving for justice, but to living in such a way that the Gospel become clear through our actions. Thus the final part of the trio comes into play. Evangelism, according to the author is more about living out God's love than preaching at the people we are trying to reach.

This slim volume can be read in a couple of nights. It would make an interesting study for clergy, worship leaders, or people in the pews who want to add a new dimension to their worship living.

Armchair Interviews says: Reading this book could very well change not just how you worship, but how you live.
