Overview
The first readings from the lectionary we hear at Mass on Sundays and holy days are often overlooked by homilists. Coming largely from the Old Testament, these passages require a thorough understanding of the history and culture that produced them, as well as an insight into their relation to the Gospel readings and their relevance to modern Christians. In these short commentaries, Archbishop Pilarczyk focuses on the first readings of all three liturgical years (A,B,C) In order to clarify their relationship with other Mass readings and communicate their significance. Each reflection puts the reading in context, discusses its content and application and ends with questions for discussion or reflection. This book would be helpful to Scripture study groups and prayer groups, or for individual preparation for Mass.

Publishers Description
"All too often the first readings are either totally neglected in reflecting and preaching on the Sunday readings, or they are looked on exclusively as illustrating the gospel. There's nothing wrong with looking at them that way, but each of these first readings does have a meaning and a context of its own, and being aware of that will provide further enrichment." --from the Introduction

First Readings on Their Own and in Context of Liturgy  Aug 6, 2006
This work is a welcome addition to the archbishop's 2002 "Live Letters," insights and reflections on the second readings. "When God Speaks," offers a similar approach to the oft-neglected first readings for Sundays and solemnities of all three liturgical cycles. In his introduction, Archbishop Pilarczyk reminds us that in addition to illustrating the gospels, the first readings, taken from the Old Testament and the Acts of the Apostles, have a meaning and context of their own. He offers five significant dates from the Old Testament as an anchor for the readings and his own reflections. To further aid readers in appreciating the history of the readings, he addresses five aspects of each.

The context segment fits the reading into the biblical book from which it is taken and also into the days' liturgy; content reviews the original basic meaning of the text; and connection relates the first reading to others in the liturgy. Finally, each reading is discussed in terms of consequences, "What does the reading at this place in the liturgy mean for my life of faith?" Discussion questions follow.

"When God Speaks" is an excellent resource for individuals and groups seeking to deepen their experience of the liturgy.
