Not Just a Good Read but a Practical Guide  May 1, 2009
Myra Perrine has written an approachable and inspiring book about understanding our spiritual temperament, or our 'God language'. The foreward to the book is written by Gary Thomas, who first identified these nine temperaments in his book "Sacred Pathways." Perrine does a good job of describing what this God language is, and the different paths of Activist, Ascetic, Caregiver, Contemplative, Enthusiast, Intellectual, Naturalist, Sensate, and Traditionalist. There are also two assessment tools within the book, one to discover your spiritual temperament, and another to assess your current spiritual practices.

What does this book cover that goes beyond Thomas' book? Perrine is more focused on application, and with each temperament there is an outline of four-weeks that gives practical exercises for experiencing God through for that temperament. There are hints and sidebars throughout which provide additional ideas for personal reflection, prayer, and journaling. Chapter 4 addresses "How Does My Spiritual Temperament Help Me Love God?". Chapter 5 is completely new material, on "Denominations and Differences in the Church Today". Chapter 6 is quite good, addressing "The Lifelong Journey of Knowing a Loving God." You get the feel throughout the book that the author cares deeply about the material, about connecting with God, and has a lot of experience in helping others do this.

Recognizing our Spiritual differences and individualities  Dec 29, 2008
I would highly recommend this book, along with Kiersey and Bates, "Please Understand Me" to all Christians, and even to non-Christians--as long as they don't have a knee jerk negative reaction towards anything that carries that word-- can benefit if they remove from their minds the Christian language, and insert their own spiritual message into it, because the fundamental root of the book aligns closely with Myers/Briggs personality type indicators, and each person's experience and practice of faith varies widely with the personality types.

A common problem Christians (and many of the other religions) have is that each member believes the way that they interact with God and with each other in a community of believers is the "right and only" way to worship and to experience God, and just as Myers/Briggs (Kiersey and Bates) note in Personality interactions between friends and family members, seek to perform the "Pygmalian Project" and covertly or overtly try to make the person either be more like them, or in the case of Faith and Worship, to worship and experience God just like they do.

The truth is, that every faith community needs the combined gifts and experiences of each of the types. We need our intellectuals to define and refine the contents of our beliefs and how they apply to our experience today, we need the visionaries that can inspire people to act on their faith, we need the ascetics to help us reduce the unnecessaries. We need the insights of the introverts who have their most profound religious experiences alone, and we need the insights of the extraverts whose profound worship experiences happen together, and most of all, we need to recognize our differences in the way we perceive and experience our faith so that we do not deny and trample on someone else's vital experience and interaction within the faith community, and so that the different denominations can finally begin to understand each other.

We can begin to understand the need for truly vital and active services that the pentacostals need, we can begin to understand the quiet and intellectual probing of the Lutherans, the emotional underpinnings of the fundementalists, and even more important, to recognize that though you can see the different faith types in the leaders of each denomination, we can begin to understand that each of these denominations carry all of the faith types (or God Languages, if you will).

This book is great for anyone who is interested in defining and improving their own relationship with God, and for those who are interested in defining and improving their own relationship within the faith community.

All within traditional patriarchal Christianity  Aug 19, 2008
I perused the book but found it used exclusively Christian terminology. "God" means eternal male, white man, dominate father, et al.

This book is not an enlightened understanding of the divine. It does not celebrate estastic moments; once again, it is old traditional Christianity--tolerating slight differences but twisting us back to adoration of superior white males.

What's Your God Language?  Mar 23, 2008
I found What's Your God Language? to be thoughtful and interesting book, and a well-written discussion about the various ways people are naturally "wired" to connect to God. I had read Gary Thomas' book, Sacred Pathways, several years ago and at that time had found it helpful in understanding my own temperament and approach to God. Dr. Perrine takes the same nine spiritual temperaments discussed in Thomas' book and expands on them. Gary Thomas wrote the foreward for Myra Perrine's book, and in it he says "Myra has done me 'one better' by not only offering a fresh perspective of these pathways, but also creating very practical exercises that make understanding them a much more life-changing realization." The book is also a very enjoyable read; in fact, even before I got to the main material of the book, as I was reading her 10-page introduction, I was inspired and intrigued. If you could see my copy of the book you would find highlights, stars and comments in the margins...and that's just the introduction! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in drawing closer to God, or in understanding the very different ways you, your loved ones and your friends may have in approaching God. It's quite fascinating, and can make a real difference in your relationships by offering you some good insight into how these differences manifest themselves. In my opinion, you will lose nothing, and gain quite a bit, by buying What's Your God Language? It's worth much more than the purchase price!

So freeing, and practically helpful!  Dec 26, 2007
As a woman who is seeking God, married to a man who's way of connecting with God looks so different than my own, I found this book extremely helpful and freeing, both for myself, and for my marriage,in terms of how I see and support my husbands pursuit of intimacy with God. Really powerful stuff! Myra's insightful descriptions of how different people most naturally connect with their Creator are fundamentally helpful and liberating. God used her words to remind me to give myself and others permission to embrace how they are wired, and really helped me mentally to release a lot of unhealthy comparisons my mind and heart would automatically make as I journey with other Christ followers. Good on so many levels!
