Catholics Beware: A seriously flawed psuedohistory  Jan 16, 2008
I picked this book up at a Cathedral Book stall, liking its compactness and hoping to read it to brush up on Church History. Unfortunately this Church history sounds like it could have been written by Luther or some Protestant with an axe to grind. Charlene Altemose has some funny ideas about what indulgences are, is dead wrong on the facts regarding Galileo; repeats anti-semitic slurs against Pius XII (whom virtually every historian today exonerates) and is simply ignorant of the true causes of the Protestant Revolt. I'll take Erasmus' more contemporaneous explanation: It was all about money and women... Where this book really goes off the rails is the page on "the crusades" which never explains how they were defensive reactions against Muslim aggression. Does it matter to her that Christian pilgrims were subjected to violence, robbery, kidnapping, rape and slavery by a tyrannical muslim horde occupying Christian Holy Lands? Apparently not. She rather pathetically dismisses some of the finest examples of Christian bravery in a paragraph of hand wringing and apologies.

The last pages, "The Church Experience After Vatican II" rather gleefully describes a protestant faith community masquerading as a Catholic Parish. For practicing Catholics it's that seventies show again: a nightmarish liturgical and catechetical scenario with no statues, greeters, eucharistic ministers, reconciliation "chat rooms," layperson RCIA groups, crowds of laypeople on the altar, under the altar, in the sacristy, in the classroom, everywhere! But where are the priests? No mention of them, because apparently after Vatican II they're superfluous..."We are the Church..."

What You Should Know About Church History is a book which I decided to throw away rather than resell because I cannot, in good conscience, risk it poisoning the well of credulous Catholics out there. A better history that will actually make you like being a Catholic is the far more interesting (and historically accurate) Triumph: The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church by H. W. Crocker III.
