Overview
"A definitive scholarly work for pastors, layleaders, and all students of scripture." Many sincere, Bible-believing Christians are "Calvinists" only by default. Thinking that the only choice is between Calvinism (with its presumed doctrine of eternal security) and Arminianism (with its teaching that salvation can be lost), and confident of Christ's promise to keep eternally those who believe in Him, they therefore consider themselves to be Calvinists. It takes only a few simple questions to discover that most Christians are largely unaware of what John Calvin and his early followers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries actually believed and practiced. Nor do they fully understand what most of today's leading Calvinists believe. Although there are disputed variations of the Calvinist doctrine, among its chief proponents (whom we quote extensively in context) there is general agreement on certain core beliefs. Many evangelicals who think they are Calvinists will be surprised to learn of Calvin's belief in salvation through infant baptism, and of his grossly un-Christian behavior, at times, as the "Protestant Pope" of Geneva, Switzerland. Most shocking of all, however, is Calvinism's misrepresentation of God who "is love." It is our prayer that this volume will enable readers to examine more carefully the vital issues involved and to follow God's Holy Word-not man.

In this enlarged and revised edition I have endeavored to respond to the critics." --Dave Hunt (Read by Eric Martin)

Reviews - What do our customers think?
The worst book ever  Jul 2, 2008
I read this book about 5 years ago and I was appalled at the complete illogical thinking. I will read it again at the reqest of my dad but I will say that Dave Hunt does ask the correct question - What love is this? Arminians need to answer what kind of love is it when there is an omnipotent God who chooses not use His omni attributes to bring someone to salvation? What are the components of love found in the Bible? Compassion, Mercy, Chastening are the components of love. If God loves He will have compassion, mercy, and He will Chasten. God will prove His love with these components by using all His resources. If a man dies and is damned to Hell for eternity then What Kind of Love is it for an omnipotent God to allow it?

Solid Critique of Calvinism  Jun 27, 2008
Hunt puts out a very thorough critique of the doctrine of Calvinism in "What Love Is This." While Hunt does come across as harsh in parts of the book, overall the points he makes are solid, one being that Calvinist's make God out to be the author of sin "for His good pleasure." Hunt's documentation of the cruelty of Calvin is what hit me the hardest. Calvin believed in banishment, jail, or death for those with whom he strongly disagreed religiously. This is clearly not Christlike behavior.

Calvinism exposed!  Apr 16, 2008
This book does an excellent job of exposing the problems with 5-point Calvinism and re-assuring Christians that God is sovereign but not at the expense of his LOVE. It provides Biblical argument, not just opinion. This is a good source for anyone who is not sure what Calvinism is or is not, or for someone that thinks they might be a Calvinist but they are uncomfortable with some of the extreme positions Calvinism takes.

Calvinism  Mar 21, 2008
Dave Hunt brings issues to light we all need to be informed about. Just as Catholics will rant against A WOMAN RIDES THE BEAST so will Calvinists do against this book. False doctrine hates to be exposed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as is Dave's other book on this subject, DEBATING CALVINISM, FIVE POINTS, TWO VIEWS. Get them both, get the facts. If you want a historical perspective on Calvinism you can find some great information in Dave's book, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HEAVEN. Get them, get informed.

For God so loved the...elect?  Mar 19, 2008
Hunt's book on Calvinism is long, but worth the time if you are interested in Calvinism. The book is full of information on the subject and breaks down each letter of the doctrine of TULIP. What Love Is This includes quite a few sources, many of them from Calvinists like Sproul, Piper, MacArthur, Boettner, and even Calvin himself.

While Hunt maintains that there are "fine Christians on both sides" of the Calvinist debate, he proceeds to expose the false ideas that Calvinists have about God and the Bible. Ideas like the words world (as in For God so loved the world) and all (as in through one mans offense judgement came to all...through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all...) refer only to the elect. Hunt points out inconsistencies found in Calvinism such as the idea that man is incapable of repentance and faith but condemned for failing to believe.

Hunt also shows why Calvin's lifestyle is evidence that he isn't a teacher one should follow. Calvin, like Augustine, believed his form of Christianity should be imposed on others. Besides torture and banishment, Calvin even advocated executing those he deemed to be heretics.

Christian leaders such as Tim Lahaye, Chuck Smith, Elmer Towns, William MacDonald, Chuck Missler, and others gave the book a positive review. Hunt's book is well written, well researched, and one that readers on both sides of the Calvinist debate should take a look at.
