"What is the Point of Being a Christian?" has been awarded the prestigious Michael Ramsey prize for the best in theological writing. For more information please visit:

What is the Point of being a Christian? One is pointed to God, who is the point of everything. If one thinks of religion as just 'useful' then one has reduced it to another consumer product. But if we are pointed to God, then this should make a difference to how we live. This is not a moral superiority. Christians are usually no better than anyone else. But the lives of Christians should be marked by some form of hope, freedom, happiness and courage. If they are not then why should anyone believe a word they say? In this new book, Timothy Radcliffe is at his best, writing with a prophetic edge. His argument for Christian belief is profoundly Catholic and profoundly human. But what is just as remarkable, Radcliffe's argument for and interpretation of Christian Gospel is couched in a deep understanding of human nature and the problems and anxieties of modern men and women. Radcliffe is far distant from the theologian's ivory tower and yet his understanding of the Gospel is profoundly theological. The frame of reference for this book is wide, and it is based amongst other things on Fr Radcliffe's pastoral experience of dealing with people with problematic marriages, those struggling with celibacy, those trying to understand the nature of religious authority and those trying to remain loyal to the Church which finds their sexual orientation 'irregular'.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Am I the only one out there??????  Mar 28, 2008
I have a great deal of respect for the author. I have a great deal of respect for the contribution he made to the Dominican Order, his integrity and the joy of his faith. However, I was very disappointed in this book and hate to go against the grain. I found the book to be rambling and jumping from topic to topic....I found it difficult to follow the point he was trying to make at times. However, I found his insights on the Eucharist exceptional and one I have carried with me. I do not mean any disrespect, but I found the book difficult to follow.
A must for Christians of the 21th century!  Feb 13, 2008
Beautifully written, this book is an overview of the rich inheritance of the Christian tradition and how it can help to develop the full potential of our lives. The author speaks of his own experience, with interesting quotes from the Ancient Fathers of the Desert, St. Thomas or St Agustine, but also from recent philosophers or theologians. Each chapter is an essay on a specific aspect of the Christian life. Specially recommended is the chapter about the relation we have with our body and our emotions.
What is the Point of Being Christian?  Feb 15, 2007
A well crafted work, wide ranging in its scope, and at the same time well organized. The author writes as a witness to gospel values, with feet firmly planted on the ground. His perspectives on global issues is right on target. Truly a book well worth purchasing.
Very very good book  Jan 4, 2007
I suggest this book to every good Christian since it helps in strengthening one's faith.
Well worth it!  Aug 22, 2006
I found this book to a very strong challenge for those of us in church ministry. This text is well written and very clear in it's premise and the necessary steps to follow it to it's natural conclusion. This book is a permanent fixture in my library
