Discovery of nature when walking  Aug 22, 2008
This is a beautiful book of paintings (a picture book) by children's illustrator, writer and naturalist, Thomas Locker, which was published in coordination with The Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods in Lincoln, MA. The full page paintings are reminiscent in style of the Hudson River School. The intent of the book is to introduce children (age level: 7-10) to Thoreau and his idea of nature as a source of creativity by taking the reader on a dawn to dusk walk with Thoreau as he paces the pathless wilderness. The language of the book invites quiet listening and careful walking with an attentive eye to close observance of nature as a regenerative force. It was Thoreau's habit to walk at least four hours a day "absolutely free from all wordly engagements." The book concludes with a page of quotes from Thoreau's writings on his thoughts on nature and its ability to restore health & spirit.

This book is a good way to introduce this age level to the ideas of Thoreau, the value of walking, the value and beauty of the natural world and the value of appreciating and rendering that beauty artistically.
An in depth persspective on the time line of ecology.  Apr 16, 2003
As Tom was forming the images for this book he fell extremely ill. While in a deep and long coma he met Henry and based upon that meeting several of the images in this book were changed. These beautiful images of the Hudson River and in particular Storm King Mountain will haunt and excite you as you consider how this area was formed and has survived man's interference. The essence of this area will be finally synthesized in his next book, The Story of a River. When completed this will give you a private insight into time and ecology not found anywhere else.
