This volume provides a one-volume account of the Waldenses and examination of the concept of Waldensianism from the late 12th century to the Reformation. The Waldenses is the name given to a wide variety of forms of religious dissidence and self-expression since the time of its supposed founder, the Lyonnais merchant Waldo or Valdes, in the late 12th century. The result of the extremely long survival of the different strands of this movement is that writing on this subject has tended to assume a continuity throughout the periods and neglected some of the aspects of the movement that did not survive. This book draws on primary sources to consider each of the manifestations of the movement in turn and to determine its religious, social and political character. It examines connections in space and time as shown in the correspondence and interchange between the different groups of Waldenses; it considers whether or not certain groups such as the Czech Pikarts or the devil-worshippers of Arras, should to be called Waldenses.
