A Stunning Debut!  Mar 12, 2007
T.L. Hines has crafted a stunning debut novel that is not to be missed. Jude Allman has died three times, only to miraculously rise from the dead each time. Doctors have no explanation for Jude's unique ability and he is reluctantly thrust into the spotlight of the public eye. Jude retreats to Red Lodge, Montana and changes his name and identity hoping for a fresh start and escape from celebrity status. As Jude settles into his new life, he suddenly finds himself in the middle of trouble once again. Someone is kidnapping children, and whether Jude likes it or not he is the only who can stop it.

T.L. Hines has done what so many authors have failed to: He makes you forget you are actually reading a novel. Waking Lazarus is much more than a book. It is an experience that grabs hold of the reader and doesn't let go. The plot is superb and perfectly executed. The characters are engrossing and human, and it is fascinating to observe the growth and transformation each of the main characters undergoes.

Hines doesn't throw spiritual themes in our face, but hope, faith, redemption, and love are cleverly woven throughout the story in a powerful and effective way. This is one of the best novels I've read this year, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys quality faith-based fiction full of mystery and suspense. (From Christian Review of Books)
Pretty Good  Feb 11, 2007
Waking Lazarus is a fast read, and I as I read it I kept thinking "wow, and then what happens, and then what happens, and then what happens..." Even though the book is certainly a page turner, I finished the book feeling a little cheated. The book is about a guy who dies and comes back to life several interesting topic, to say the least. But the book somehow manages to tap dance around the biggest question in the book... "So, what, if anything, happens to Jude in the afterlife?" It's really the big 64 thousand dollar question that never really gets answered in the book. Don't get me wrong, Hines is an excellent tap-dancer...the question certainly gets asked in the book, but the lack of answers simply build to a climax that never really happens. Unlike "The Lovely Bones" or "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," the novel is more of a tease. Jude keeps dying throughout the book, and I kept wondering "wow, how is the author going to pull all this together?" Well....Hines does and he doesn't. It's not a bad book, like I said, it was a page turner, but I just felt a little let down by the climax. For a book about death, it just doesn't seem to quite deliver.
Way to come out of the gate  Dec 16, 2006
Walking Lazarus was a compelling read that I devoured in one sitting. The characters caught and held my interest. Hines did a wonderful job of crafting a disturbing `whodunit' that kept me guessing to the end. When I finally found out who the killer was I was totally shocked. Threads of faith are woven throughout the book, giving us insight into Christian characters while not coming across as preachy. While I did find myself sometimes confused by the many changes of character point of view in the book, it's more because of my personal preference to live inside one or two character's minds rather than four or five, than a lack on Hines' part. He did an excellent job switching back and forth and crafting unique voices for each of his characters.

I agree with the above review, saying that Jude's paranoia issues were resolved a bit quickly but it did not take away from the story at all. The subtle romance brewing between Jude and the mother of his child, Rachel, was just enough to keep my romantic soul happy. At the same time it was not so much that a non romance lover or a male reader would be put off.

Excellent debut by T. L. Hines that leaves me on the edge of my seat waiting for his next work of fiction.
Absorbing story and characters  Dec 4, 2006
I really liked this book, although it was a quick read and could have used some more fleshing out. I kind of consider it "The Dead Zone-Lite" as it's very similar to the book by Stephen King. Interesting premise and story, I just wish that Jude Allman's past would have been expanded upon more. Some of the plot was predictable, and disturbing, but this didn't detract from the overall experience. I look forward to more books by T. L. Hines and there could definitely be another book starring Jude Allman.
A can't-put-it-down read  Oct 21, 2006
It's been a long time since a book has kept me from my own writing, but this book did it. I read the entire thing within two days. From the first page to the last, I just had to know what was going to happen next and Hines kept me guessing right up to the very end. Whew! And what an end. I can't wait for another book from Hines. I will admit, though, that it came real close to being "too" creepy at times. I want to see more from Hines but I don't want him to go too far on the creeps. My heart couldn't take more than what he's already dished out. I loved the heart and bravery of the characters and the message for all of us to dare to listen and obey God's voice.
