Item Description...
Gabriel Kuebelbeck Neuzil lived nine months inside his mother with only half a heart. He lived but two and a half hours once he was born. In that time, a whole community gathered to celebrate, love, and honor him. Gabriel's mother, Amy Kuebelbeck, shares the story of her family's heartbreaking loss as well as the tragedy of all babies born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. After meeting with parents, counselors, medical professionals, and their parish priest, Kuebelbeck and her husband, Mark Neuzil, faced the ultimate conundrum: What happens when keeping your baby alive and sparing him unnecessary pain are mutually exclusive? With courage and clarity, Kuebelbeck and her family chose to offer Gabriel the best possible life in the short time he would be with them. Gabriel died peacefully in his mother's arms, surrounded by people who loved him.

Waiting With Gabriel: A Story of Cherishing a Baby's Brief Life  May 12, 2008
After reading about Gabriel and his family in an article, I immediately searched my local bookstores but came up empty handed. I placed orders at two large retailers who could not promise they would ever be able to get the book in for certain due to supply and demand so I hit the internet to buy even a used copy if possible. I placed my order and upgraded shipping to receive it ASAP. I could not put this book down as soon as it arrived. I finished it the same day I started it. I cannot thank the authors enough for putting into words what they experienced and allowing me to get to know Gabriel. I do not doubt that I will never forget him. I feel as though he has a permanent place in my heart, and being a healthcare professional that unfortunately deals with this exact scenario at times, it allows me to understand more than ever before so many things from "the other side." I will be forever touched by this beautiful little boy's life story. This book should be required reading for all healthcare professionals, as it reminds us how precious each moment in life and death is. I cannot count the number of times Gabriel has flooded my mind since finishing the book. What a remarkable little man to be able to touch people he never met. Thank you to the authors for allowing others to catch just a glimpse of your childs life and experiences with him. I am forever grateful that this book was written.
I couldn't put it down...  Jul 26, 2007
I read this story only a few weeks after losing my own newborn daughter to a severe heart defect. I was amazed at the many similarities between my experience and the author's. I guess it was helpful to know that someone else has experienced this pain and has survived it. The story of Gabriel will always be close to my heart.
Healing words  Dec 23, 2006
I received this book from a friend at the MISS Foundation after finding out some very difficult things about my son and realizing that he was going to die. Amy's words were so touching and so amazing. There were so many times I had to put the book down to cry because I'd been feeling just the same as she was in the book. It was as if she was reading my mind. Every one who is going through a difficult pregnancy or has lost a child should read this beautiful tribute to a child that will always be loved as every bereved parent has that same hole in their heart where their child should be.
A great review of the most difficult choice ever,  Dec 5, 2006
This is a great touching read if you are able to accept other people's difficult choices and explaination of that choice. If you making decisions about an HLHS child, this may not be the read for you. It is an inspirational story of dealing with this difficult decision; but it is not a theoretical review of the choices involved.
Being the brother of an individual who has had to go through a decision like this, I was touched and inspired by the story. However, I would never recommend this book to my sister. Read with an open mind while thinking of the personal story at hand. It is one of inspiration and courage. No one wants to have to make a decision like this and the way this situation was dealt with was inspirational no matter your own personal opinion.
So Comforting  Apr 6, 2006
I was 22 weeks pregnant when we discovered that the precious daughter I was expecting had Patau's Syndrome - a wicked and terminal chromosomal disorder.

Someone recommended Waiting with Gabriel to me and I was overwhelmed by how keenly the author articulated the breadth of my emotions through this hardest journey. While reading it, I often felt like Amy Kuebelbeck was writing from within my own mind.

This book became a beacon of support for me and I continue to refer back to it to help give all my feelings and thoughts clarity, and to remind myself that we are not alone in our sadness. It's also become the book I pass to my friends and family, so that they can have a more intimate understanding of the steps in this never-ending journey of parental love and loss.

Waiting with Gabriel is at the very top of my list of the most significant books I have ever read. It is a must read on so many levels.
