Vision Building Blocks  May 2, 2010
Sometimes I get a little flack from inexperienced leaders who question the wisdom of a leadership system with 20 management buckets (core competencies) in my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit. They want it simpler. But leadership and management issues are never simple. They are complex. If you just want "add water and stir," then abandon any thoughts about leading others. Ditto the vision thing.

I've always appreciated Andy Stanley's approach to what he calls "visioneering." His blueprint for developing and maintaining personal vision has a comprehensive foundation of (count them) 20 building blocks. Preach it, Andy!

So here's the question: Is it possible to build a strategic vision (or a B.H.A.G.--a Big Holy Audacious Goal) for your organization before you've developed a personal vision?

The vision question looms large in any leadership discussion. Stanley draws a simple, but important distinction between a vision and a plan. "A vision is what could and should be. A plan is a guess as to the best way to accomplish the vision."

I'm tempted to list all 20 of his building blocks here, but if I did, you would be tempted not to buy the book. So here are just a few teasers:

#1. A vision begins as a concern.
#5. What God originates, he orchestrates.
#8. Cast your vision to the appropriate people at the appropriate time.
#13. Visions thrive in an environment of unity; they die in an environment of division.
#14. Abandon the vision before you abandon your moral authority.
#17. The end of a God-ordained vision is God.
#20. Maintaining a vision requires bold leadership.

Urge someone on your team to buy, read and summarize this excellent book for your staff. You'll also appreciate his insightful questions after each building block. Note: I have used half a dozen of his sidebar quotations in PowerPoints in recent years, including this superb reminder from the Leadership Challenge, "Leaders must challenge the process because systems will unconsciously conspire to maintain the status quo and prevent change."

A vision  Feb 10, 2010
This challenges us with one of the messages from Proverbs, "Without a vision (dream), the people perish." Get a valid vision and get busy.
Encouraging work  Dec 9, 2009
Andy Stanley does a great job of guiding you along the path of taking what God has given you, good news, and taking that to others. To catch a vision of what can be. It can be applied to any vision that you may have. Beat back the negative and move forward in your dream. This book will help you get there.
Best Book I Have Ever Read On Vision  Oct 4, 2009
Quite frankly, "Visioneering" by Andy Stanley is the best book I have ever read on the topic of vision. George Barna wrote a good book a number of years ago entitled "The Power of Vision", however, his title is targeted more for the church leader.

Stanley's book, on the other hand, is geared towards any Christian who wants to have a vision for his or her life.

The narrative flows freely and is an excellent read. Stanley focuses on the biblical character of Nehemiah to draw parallels between what he faced and what we can face today when searching for a vision for our lives.

Among the topics covered include:

1. Praying and planning about the vision God has for you.
2. How faith is an important part of vision.
3. The price of having a vision.
4. Obstacles you face in your vision.
5. The importance of having moral authority.
6. Distractions you will face.
7. Maintaining your course when pursuing the vision God has for you.

I highly recommend the book to any Christian who wants to get out of their comfort zone and wants to pursue God's best for his or her life.

Read and enjoy!
