Item Description...
Overview
Some two thousand years after he walked the earth, Jesus Christ is still a hot topic. And for all the ridiculous, twisted, Da Vinci Code-esque conspiracy theories and lies about Jesus that have permeated popular culture and even the academy over the years, the truth about his character, nature, and work has not changed. So what exactly is the truth about Jesus Christ? That's the question the authors of Vintage Jesus seek to answer by breaking it down into a number of sub-questions about Jesus, including Is Jesus the only God? Why did Jesus come to earth? Did Jesus rise from death? Why should we worship Jesus? and others. Nonbelievers and new Christians looking to sit down and delve into the topic of Jesus, asking the toughest, most confounding questions they can think of, will find solid, biblical answers presented in a relevant, accessible way. "In a society where the Nicene Creed doesn't hold as much water as a tall Americano, Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears take an unabashed stance on biblical theology that comes as a refreshing yet timeless hyssop in response to a Christian sociological breakdown of truth." Brandon Ebel, President, Tooth & Nail Records "Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears combine profound understanding of modern culture with weighty Christian doctrine that is faithful to the Bible. It's written in such an interesting style that it's hard to put down. I strongly recommend it!" Wayne Grudem, Research Professor of Bible and Theology, Phoenix Seminary, Phoenix, Arizona "A great book about Jesus-yesterday, today, and forever relevant. The answers provided are right on and meaningful to everyone." Allen R. Weiss, President, Worldwide Operations, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts "This book reveals Mark Driscoll as a highly powerful, colorful, down-to-earth catechist, targeting teens and twenty-somethings with the old, old story told in modern street-cred style. And Professor Breshears ballasts a sometimes lurid but consistently vivid presentation of basic truth about the Lord Jesus Christ." J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College "Wow! This is a powerful book. It's edgy and, frankly, it made me uncomfortable at certain points... but for the right reasons. We need light, not polish, over the story of Jesus, and that's exactly what this well-written and provocative work provides. It may make you squirm, but the strong biblical orientation and the crisp historic perspectives give you a context for that squirming!" Da

"This book presents an honest view of Jesus without giving in to the pressure to soften him up. I had to grapple with the real vintage Jesus. This is a Savior worth fighting for.
Matt Lindland, 2000 Olympic silver medalist in wrestling; top-ranked middleweight mixed martial arts fighter

"This new book by Driscoll, one of the most promising young pastors I've met, and his theological partner Gerry Breshears, tells the old, old story in a contemporary, exciting, in-your-face manner. Though written to appeal to today's younger seekers, nothing of classic Christian theology is omitted. Those of my generation may bridle at some aspects of the book-but it's good if we do. This book is just what's needed for us to understand how to reach the postmoderns and a great tool to help all of us connect with young seekers. This is both bold and uncompromising. I can highly recommend it."
Chuck Colson, Founder, Prison Fellowship

"If you think that you already know Jesus, think again. This book will open the eyes of many who have yet to see the radical nature of Jesus' life and teaching. For the spread of the gospel and the advancement of the kingdom, I can only hope many will read this book and embrace Jesus as the true Lord, God, Savior, and King that he is."
Bruce A. Ware, Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Reviews - What do our customers think?
OK: Not as Unique and Compelling as the First Two  May 31, 2008
This was a decent book, but personally I found Driscoll's first two more compelling. There's some stuff in here that I felt distracted from the Gospel message a bit. One of the things Driscoll is good at is getting past the stuff that the institutional church has gotten mired in and presenting the gospel and godly ways of living (at least as he interprets) in a very straightfoward way. I felt this book had some parts that veered away from that. For example, I honestly don't care who thinks what about whether Jesus's mother was a virgin or not. I do accept him as the divine Son of God and beyond that, it's just not a biggie for me. It doesn't seem to be a huge thing in the Gospel, either. The colloquial style that generally works very well in Driscoll's writing and speaking also distracts in this book... and, actually, is used to the extent I almost wonder if he has some pride issues wrapped up in it.

Classic Driscoll  May 5, 2008
Being a regular podcast listener of Driscoll's, I was eager to get my hands on this book. I'm well aware of the controversy that Mark seems to generate, so I was interested in seeing if he came across differently in print. Short answer - this is the same Driscoll that we know and love!

While the brilliant jacket design may make you think that this is purely a hip, relevant take on the life of Christ, it's actually a broad summary of the doctrine of Christ. Who he is, what he came to do, what he's doing now, etc. As with his sermons, Driscoll includes extensive research, pop culture references, and a fantastic depth of scriptural knowledge.

However, one of the main problems that I had with the book was primarily found in the second half. Whereas Driscoll's one-liners had initially worked, they started to feel forced, awkward, and a bit over-the-top as the book progressed. It was like he was trying too hard to get those classic Driscoll quips included.

Despite a few faults I had with the book (primarily with the writing), "Vintage Jesus" is still worth reading. I have a lot of respect for Driscoll and the way he is able to connect with a tough culture while staying true to the gospel message.

Vintage Jesus  May 2, 2008
Vintage Jesus is a great summary to many questions being asked today. It covers a wide range of topics from the virgin birth to where is Jesus today. It gives answers for those wanting to understand the nature of who Jesus really is, and gives clarification to those who want to understand Him better. The book has a chapter dedicated to each question, with sort of a FAQ section at the end of each chapter. Driscoll describes many of the competing views of Jesus in the midst of explaining Him for a biblical perspective. It is a great book I would highly recommend that is very informative and very funny at times.

Vintage Jesus Rocks!  Apr 28, 2008
This book is a great resource to have. Driscoll is able to apply apologetic truths about Jesus to our everyday life.

Pertinent Propositionalism and Passionate Pastoring...  Apr 15, 2008
I had high expectations for this book - I'll confess that I am fond of Driscoll. For no other reason that he is a refreshing stream of absolutism in an otherwise ambiguous overly-artistic flowery world of words and images. He defines the 'X' in my generation.
However, the first chapter was a little disappointing. If you're familiar with Driscoll, then you'll have heard his sermon at the 2006 Desiring God National Conference where he argued for a rigorous combining of biblical propositionalism and practical mission.
If you've heard that talk, then don't bother with the first chapter of Vintage Jesus - it's almost word for word.
But my consumer addictions aside, Vintage Jesus is more than just a doctrinal treatise on Reformed atonement theology; there are some very intimate insights into Driscoll as a pastor. He is a man who clearly cares for those he leads, often teetering somewhere between valiant confidence and overwhelming despair. Those moments in the book were quite touching - although I wouldn't tell Mark that!
The first page summarizes the book well: "This book is dedicated to anyone who takes Jesus seriously, but not themselves."
