Not the same Elizabeth as in the Felicity books  Jul 5, 2007
When you meet Elizabeth in the Felicity books, she is shy and very afraid of her big sister. However, in this book, she acts like a totally different person from the way she seems to dare her sister, something she would never do in the Felicity books. In fact, Elizabeth's pranks seem more up Felicity's alley and yet Felicity wouldn't even dare go so far. It's as if American Girl forgot who they were writing about and just decided to change Elizabeth's character. Very odd. And why did they change her hair color from the original Felicity stories? (Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things; I'm just curious.)
It was GREAT!!!  Jul 5, 2006
I read this whole book yesterday while I was waiting for the fireworks to start. I LOVED it! Elizabeth was very, very, very funny. Felicity and Elizabeth love to play tricks on Annabelle. The last trick they played in the book on the very annoying lady, Miss. Priscilla, was soooooooooo funny! You have to read this book!
Pleasant fluff, below standard for this good series  Jun 20, 2006
The plot involving duping the prissy sister of the fiance is almost as thin as the secondary characters. There is a certain urgency to Elizabeth's plight (that she will be taken to England unless a suitable bit of chicanery can be devised), but the main strength of this book is that it carries off a meticulous sense of place and time for the historical period. That makes it worth the read. Customs surrounding courtship and marriage are well detailed. The publishers, however, seem to have a flimsy excuse for expanding on the series (Felicity is the main character of the series, and perhaps they hoped for what television calls a "spinoff", not much chance of that if this is the best effort.) Of course, business is about business, and that means making money where one can. But it does seem that there could be a stronger raison d'etre for this Elizabeth book companion to the Felicity (American Girl) series. We don't see anything new, nor any evolution of the Felicity character in this story. When my publisher agreed to a sequel to my "Puppyfish" story (a simple fable, deceptively packaged as a primary grade reader, but actually a remedial reader for middle graders who have fallen behind), we doubled the size, pushed the vocabulary, and challenged the reader further with more complex plotting and sentence structure. While one cannot count on readers encountering members of a series in a particular order, character development and enrichment does make sequels feel more worthwhile. Would that Ms. Tripp has seen fit to give us more depth of character to match the wealth of historical detail.
Very Funny, Elizabeth!  May 23, 2006
I picked up both "Very Funny, Elizabeth!" and "Nellie's Promise," expecting to enjoy "Nellie's Promise" more. Surprisingly, I enjoyed this book much more. It was easier to read and the historical elements were more accurate and believable.

Elizabeth is bewitching in this book- more like the character of Felicity. Unfortunately, Felicity is absent for all but a few pages, so her missing presence detracts from the story.

"Very Funny, Elizabeth!" was a sweet and silly story. Elizabeth's pranks were ingenious. Loyal Felicity fans should definitely check this book out.
Most Funny American Girl Book!  Dec 14, 2005
Very Funny Elizabeth defently lives up to it`s name. It`s set in 1775 and it`s about Elizabeth Cole who is a sweet and spunky girl who has a best friend named Felcity Merriman. In this book Elizabeth`s sister Annabelle is going to be getting married only who she is marrying is not what anyone expected.Elizabeth must help her sister from marrying this man before it`s too late. Will she be able to help her snooty sister?
