Overview
The Second Vatican Council is a pivotal event in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church. Understanding the work of the Council is essential to understanding Church life today. The momentous events of the Council have shaped the Catholic Church for the last 40 years and will guide the church for years to come. Vatican II Today recalls the great work of the Council, explores the fundamental themes of the documents of Vatican II, and shows how the council continues the challenge the Church today. Major subjects addressed include Catholic identity, the Mass, sacraments, ecumenism/interfaith relations, Scripture, ministry, Church, handing on the faith, marriage and family, and discipleship. Vatican II Today is not an exercise in nostalgia but a book that identifies what it means to be a Catholic at the beginning of the Third Millennium.

AGAIN THE ST. ANTHONY PRESS GETS IT RIGHT  Oct 10, 2006
One of the most midstream and popular Catholic Presses once again makes accessible to the public the deepest theological truths, here those opened by the Second Vatican Council in a well-planned and implemented lay-out which in a way shadows the full Documents of the Second Vatican Council.

As a follow-up to this introductory work, the interested and committed scholar might study those documents, as well as Peter Hebblethwaite's great biography Pope John XXIII: THe Pope of the Council (please be sure to get the 1994 edition with this precise title). For further study you also might see the great American Catholic scholar and theologian Father Richard P. McBrien's CATHOLICISM, which in its latest edition continues carefully to consider the most recent developments in our Church.

You might ask: where did it all go?
Read as well the Fathers Boff's, Fox, Kung, Cardenal, Gutierrez, etc., to answer that question!

The interested purchaser would do well to use this site.com's excellent Search Inside feature for more information about this wonderful summary. For instance, on the table of contents you will find the excellent authors and authorities who were assigned each topic, and the specific topics considered. On the copyright page you may also discover that this book has been awarded the official Imprimatur by the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, which guarantees it is free of any doctrinal or moral error.

Wrongheaded and agenda-driven  Dec 24, 2005
A professor once defined the use of the term "the Spirit of Vatican II" as "What Vatican II would have said if I were Vatican II." That spirit permeates this book from start to finish. Far from being a faithful explanation of "Vatican II Today," it is instead a vain attempt to freeze into place the wrongheaded and increasingly-abandoned point of view that held sway in many corners of the Church in the United States during the late 1970s.

The basis of this book is a series of monthly newsletters commissioned by St. Anthony Messenger Press to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the close of the Second Vatican Council. For the past year or so, unfortunate readers have been exposed to tortured explanations of conciliar documents laced with highly subjective interpretations of the Council's vision. Take a look at the following excerpt from the revealingly-titled installment "Our Church":

"The Church not only looked outward; it did so in a way that no previous Church council had ever done. It looked at the world and smiled, just as God must have smiled when he gazed on the world he had created and saw that it was very good. By contrast, other Church councils had looked at the world and ignored it or deplored it, seeing it as a place of sin and corruption that they felt compelled to condemn."

The authors of such sneering, progressive musings now have seen fit to compile them for posterity. In a way, though, this book vindicates the perseverance of believing Catholics. Ms. Ball recently claimed that she participated in "Vatican II Today" in large part to counter "the desire by some to 'roll back the renewal' set in motion by Vatican II." One can easily picture Ms. Ball and Ms. McKamey looking around them and quaking at the impact of the true, orthodox renewal led by John Paul II and Benedict XVI that has captured the imagination of young Catholics.

If you have enjoyed forty years of the dissentient silly season in your parish "faith formation" programs, and if you believe that the Second Vatican Council was convened to deliver you from the faith of the Apostles, then this is the book for you. But if you really want to learn how to live "Vatican II Today," you'll skip this agenda-driven book and start by going straight to the sources. After all, it is the conciliar documents themselves that Pope Benedict has said capture the true legacy and vision of the Council. For additional help, pick up a copy of a good, reliable guide. You'll find few better than Alan Schreck's "Vatican II: the Crisis and the Promise," released last year.

You could also familiarize yourself with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, whose citations to the documents of Vatican II are second in frequency only to references to Scripture. It's not for nothing that the Catechism has been called "the teaching document of Vatican II."

Vatican II for Non-Scholars  Nov 28, 2005
The eight authors represented here, with the help of their editors, present a unique view of Vatican II in a non-academic format. Each of the 12 chapters contains several reflections by the contributor; brief information on a previous church council; a personal commentary, usually from someone who was present at Vatican II; a "new language" section; and questions for reflection and discussion. For example, the chapter on scripture discusses the Vatican II document focusing not on literal translation of the bible, but on the meaning intended by the original authors and encouraging "easy access to sacred Scripture." Dianne Bergant, who wrote this chapter, highlights the effects of the document, particularly institution of the three-year lectionary cycle. Finally, she looks to continued emphasis on scripture including biblical understanding of the relationship between humankind and the rest of the world. "Liturgy of the Word" and "lectionary" are defined. Reflection questions address (1) the reader's reaction to new bible study methods, (2) attempts of the reader's parish to promote devotion to scripture, and (3) efforts of readers to better understand the bible.

This is an excellent resource for individuals and small groups, especially since each chapter could stand alone, and is of a length and format suitable for one session. Those wishing to delve more deeply may turn to the list of Vatican II documents. Those looking for a specific topic will find the index helpful.
