Publishers Description
A terrorist bombing. A rogue experiment. A community vanished. Who will save them now? In a series that blends the urgent action of the Left Behind books with the alluring weirdness of the television show Lost, this first book opens with a terrorist bombing that combines with a rogue underground experiment to rip a clovershaped section of the working-class city of Barcester loose from the world. Cut off from any hope of help, police sergeant Jason Logan fights to keep order and track the terrorist mastermind. But after a second bomb explodes, effectively sealing the displacement of the vanished area, he knows the nightmare is just beginning. As the mist from the bomb slowly clears, those inside the vanished community find themselves surrounded by a majestic wilderness that is both primitive and primal as the vanished community battles for survival against enemies they've always known and forces they've never imagined.

A thrilling saga of finding the resources within to survive when help is emphatically not on the way.  Mar 5, 2008
Vanished is an exciting and suspenseful novel about a terrorism outbreak that devastates a working-class neighborhood in Massachusetts. Police sergeant Jason Logan struggles to keep order in the wake of a bomb explosion and a mysterious mist that appears to block outside help. Meanwhile, nurse-practitioner Kaya de los Santos must treat the wounded with limited medical resources, and her teenaged son flees for his life from both the cops and the terrorist! A thrilling saga of finding the resources within to survive when help is emphatically not on the way.
A Solid Beginning to a New Series  Feb 19, 2008
On a quiet day in a quiet community the silence is shattered by a bomb explosion in the city park. The residents of Barcester, Massachusetts, suddenly find themselves in the midst of chaos and death. A strange mist has settled around the neighborhood keeping everyone in and keeping all help on the outside. Anyone who attempts to cross the mist finds themselves on the verge of a terrifying alternate world that defies reason and logic. Now a divided community must put aside their differences and try to find a way out before the madman in their midst destroys them all.

Kathryn Mackel offers up an intriguing tale that makes for a solid beginning to a new series. Mackel's storytelling talent is on full display as she brings us a suspense filled work that comes at us from many angles. The strong characters really sell the story as we are effectively drawn into their lives and their collective search for answers. We are also treated to several creepy glimpses into the mist and what may or may not reside there. At it's heart this is a story about faith and hope in the face of danger and uncertainty. In the end we are reminded that God's love for us is greater than the chaos, fear, and despair that we may face in our own lives.

Readers need to keep in mind that Vanished is the first book in a series, even though the publishers felt the need to leave this information out of the book. This does explain the rather abrupt ending, and I have a feeling all of our questions will be answered and our expectations met as this series unfolds. I for one will be back for round two!
great read  Feb 10, 2008
as a mom of four i dont find much time for my passion reading, this book was a pleasant suprise! I loved it, and can't wait to find out what happens in the next books. I also loved the insight and prose like writing of Mackel. I just picked up The Hidden and can't wait to read it.
Wish I'd Known First  Feb 6, 2008
When I learned that Kathryn Mackel had a new novel out I was excited and had to snatch my copy as quick as I could get my hands on it. I love stories like this that are reminiscent of others like The Mist, I Am Legend and TV shows like Jericho and Lost. People isolated with only themselves to work their way out of whatever got them in this situation in the first place.

Several things come together to isolate the town of Barcester from the outside world. A terrorist bombing and a strange experiment that we know of by book's end. It's up to police Sargent Jason Logan to keep the town together as they unite to help the wounded and figure out exactly what's going on and who's responsible.

Kathryn Mackel develops a great story with lots of potential here, as well as some engaging characters to care about as you make your way with them through the carnage left by this attack, wherever it came from. There are a number of characters I care enough about to want to know what happens. Mackel's writing is as good as ever. Her plot has a lot of suspense and mystery to keep readers guessing.

There's only a couple of things about this novel that kept it from getting a five star rating from me. One of them, unfortunately, the author has little to no power over.

1) The packaging. As has been said in other reviews Vanished is the first in a series. That said, my copy of the novel doesn't indicate this anywhere. Not the front or back covers. Nothing between the covers. So imagine my surprise when I got to the 'end' of the story. This was poor design on the part of the publisher in my humble opinion.

2) The ending. Not knowing that this was book one in a series I got to the end and a character walks into a church. That's it. No closure of any of the story lines. I understand that the big plot point (who did this and why) should not be resolved until the final book. Having only one thread resolved would've been a good clue that it was the beginning of a series. However, every series I've personally read were written so that each book had one thread that was resolved by the last page while the rest of the threads were left dangling for book two. At which point one of those threads would get resolved by the end of book two and so on.

I love Kathryn Mackel's novels. The Hidden and The Departed are two wonderful novels. And the writing and story in Vanished are just as good, maybe better. But this abrupt ending with nothing at all resolved left me dissatisfied. I'm not sure I'll read book two. I'll have to wait and see on that one.

All this said, if you're aware that you're going to be reading a series Vanished is a great thrill ride. Hop on. Just brace yourself for the sudden stop.
Vanished ~ Reviewed  Jan 14, 2008

This book starts out describing the events that happen after a bombing. The author has broken down the events of this book into hours. The first section is named "The First Hour" (of course it is!) What do the police and federal agents do immediately after a bombing has occurred? This is a post 911 book. References are made to that event and how things are done differently now. The book is suspenseful and Kathryn develops about 5 main characters all of which have their own drama's happening in the middle of this tragedy.

As I was reading along and got into "The Fifth Hour" of the book some really unexpected things started to happen. I didn't see how this author was going to tie this all up and explain this new twist in the story. I only had 5 chapters to go in the fifth hour. There wasn't enough time. Then I thought if she did tie it up it would have to be quick and it would ruin the story. I read the last page of the book and realized that this was book#1 in a new series that she is writing.(I didn't read the back cover of this book first) Ok, that explained a lot. This book really leaves you hanging. All 5 main characters are in the middle of suspenseful drama. She definitely leaves you wondering what exactly is keeping this town in Massachusetts stranded.

Why hadn't anyone come to help them? What is that mist? Will the bomber strike again? Who is this all connected?

I don't know how long you'll have to wait for the sequel. All I know is that it will be worth the wait.
