Item Description...
A lone witness to a bombing attack at a West Virginia art gallery, aspiring artist Hummingbird Collins begins receiving ominous recorded messages by a cult leader who is determined to rid the world of everything he considers unattractive. Original. 50,000 first printing.

Publishers Description
The city of Lehigh, West Virginia, faces the insidious threat of a sadistic cult bent on eliminating all "unpretty" things in the world.
A bomb goes off at the Conklin Art Gallery, killing eight people associated with a unique Michelangelo exhibit being shown there. The only person who may have seen the bomber is Hummingbird Collins, an aspiring artist who works down the street from the gallery. But she soon starts receiving ominous cassette recordings of a rambling madman who reveals his plan to rid the world of "unpretty" things.
This madman -- known only as Number 26 -- leads a cult known as the Michelangelus Movement, which has kidnapped and tortured people for use in their bizarre artistic experiments over the past dozen years.
When Hummingbird breaks her frightened silence, she enlists the help of Detective Buck Barnes, her brother, and an old family friend, Ready Robinson, a former pro-football player who entered the priesthood after ending his NFL career. But when Hummingbird is abducted by the cult, her friends must discover where she's been taken before she becomes another addition to the leader's horrific replication of Michelangelo's masterpiece -- "Last Judgment."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Horrible deceitful book!  Jan 18, 2010
This book is advertised as a thriller but it's not. It's a thinly disguised book about religion. Disgusting. I almost didn't read the book when I found out the heroine's name was....Hummingbird! PLEEZE! However, it caught my attention and I read to almost the mid-way point when....boom. Nothing but religion. I stopped reading and would never pick up another book by this author! If you want to write about religion, fine but DO NOT deceive the reader by simply omitting that little fact in all the book blurbs! This is a dishonest book! It's about religion - put that on the book blurb so you don't waste most reader's time!
Apparently the author is ashamed of her deceitful book - she didn't even use her real name! Shame on you Sharon Carter Rogers - whoever you are! SHAME!!!!!
Another great story from Sharon Carter Rogers!  Mar 26, 2009
I loved Sharon's first book, Sinner, and couldn't wait to dive into Unpretty. She didn't disappoint.

Once again, I found Sharon's characters engaging. I liked that I could tie two of the characters back to Sinner and that Galway is mentioned! That being said, you don't have to know anything about the characters from Sinner to enjoy Unpretty. The two stories really don't have anything to do with one another in terms of plot.

I expected Unpretty to be a similar type of story as Sinner, a supernatural thriller. I was wrong. Unpretty is very much in the real world without the supernatural element. And yet I found the "monsters" in this story to be more chilling.

Other reviewers have detailed the plot so rather than rehash the book again, let me touch on another point. I've heard/read that some think this book is too graphic. In my personal opinion, I don't agree. Yes, there are vivid descriptions, but I think the descriptions are more realistic than graphic. And I didn't find anything in the book to be gratuitous. I think it's a matter of sensitivity. I found a couple of scenes in Showdown (by Ted Dekker) more disturbing in their descriptions than anything in Unpretty. It's going to come down to your personal filter and what triggers you have.

All of that being said, Unpretty is an intense story. Once I started the book, I couldn't put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next and didn't want to wait to find out. I tried to figure out how everything tied together and what specific motives were behind it all.

Sharon Carter Rogers is an author I recommend to others interested in a griping story with great characters!
Sharon Carter Rogers Does it Again!  Nov 22, 2008
While I eagerly awaited Sharon's new book, I was unprepared for the new standard of suspense she created with Unpretty! I was spellbound from start to finish. My emphasis here is " finish." Often with books (or movies) of suspense, the writer creates a high atmosphere of intrigue and emotion during the story without the capacity to sustain it throughout; endings then become "lame" or contrived. By the time Unpretty was showing signs of wrapping up I couldn't imagine how Sharon could possibly close it out without losing her momentum. But she DID. Sharon kept her emotionally charged momentum and kept me spellbound until the very end. She managed also to successfully close this mystery 'case' while making me yearn for another installment. What will happen with the Van Gogh Splinter correspondence...
I will be giving Unpretty for Christmas this year...
Finally...........another book by Sharon Carter Rodgers  Nov 19, 2008
Sharan Carter Rodgers does it again. First with "Sinner" and again with "Unpretty" As soon as I got the book, I started to read it and could not put it down. Twisted and suspenseful, Rogers keeps up the pace with a terrific story line and wonderful characters. Once introduced to Hummingbird Collins, (the only witness to a horrific bombing) you can't keep from turning the next page to see what happens to her. Can't wait for book number 3...............or should I say number the book and you will know what I mean.
Unpretty  Nov 18, 2008
Sharon Carter Rogers has a vivid imagination, and fortunately for us, she likes to write down what she imagines. Unpretty is the kind of read you're hoping for every time you sit down and and crack open a new hooks you from the beginning and doesn't let up until the very end.

Well written, with a plot that is unique and disturbing, it searches such themes as faith, life after death, and suffering. And in her unique way, Rogers leads the reader, not to answers, but to questions such as, "Where is Jesus during suffering?" and "What do I believe about the afterlife?" I love that she doesn't "preach" but gently prods the reader with thoughts and questions raised by her characters. I find this to be more provoking than being given the answers.

If you like suspense, I highly recommend Unpretty, as well as Sinner.
