Reviews - What do our customers think?
Hard to read and a bit boring  Jul 29, 2008
The book is based on the theme of "the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven" mentioned in Matthew 6:13-19. The author explores several of these keys.

I like the informal, casual style of this book. In his Bible citations, the author uses mostly the NKJV, though, which doesn't fit with his otherwise casual writing style.
In addition, there are tons of spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes that distract from the content. They could have easily been avoided by giving the manuscript to someone for basic editing. It appears like he submitted a late draft of the book instead of the final version.

What intrigued me most about the book before reading it was the subtitle "Keys to Breaking the Chains of Habitual Sin". Even though the keys he explores are important elements, unfortunately, the author doesn't go into enough detail. I had hoped that some of the fictional examples that are introduced early in the book would be expanded on later, but unfortunately, that doesn't happen. The way they are, they illustrate some of the common habitual sins, but don't really help breaking the chain of these habitual sins. For example, the only advice on overeating is "Not until Uncle Ebee submits himself to some simple dietary laws, like don't over-eat and eat a balanced diet with regular exercise, will he begin to lose weight." Everybody knows that that's basically the solution in a nutshell, but figuring out how to do this and how to stick with the plan is where most people fail. This is not addressed by the author at all, though.

(Note: The copy of the book I read was given to me through Mind & Media as a gift from the Publisher in the summer of 2005 who donated the books for reviewers.)

Pastor Offers Practical, Biblical 'Keys' to Freedom in Christ  Aug 17, 2005
Barber, who pastored Living Fellowship of Rio Rico, AZ, draws from his years of teaching on how to overcome day-to-day temptation, illustrating every scriptural key and spiritual solution with a real-life application.

From this pastor's perspective, Unlock the Prison Doors reveals a God of grace and mercy, who wants more than anything else to see us succeed. "Faith gives us access to a relationship of trust and confidence in our Lord," writes the author.

Because of this positive perspective, Pastor Barber wants to help Christians discover why God made them and accepts them into a new family relationship when they accept Christ as Savior. More mature Christians can also gain a better understanding of how to overcome habitual sin that 'binds' them in negative, destructive personal prisons.

Throughout the book, Barber offers scripture revealing truths that open the path to a greater understanding of self and harmful cycles of sin. He highlights what scriptures teach about a Christian's responsibilities and privileges as God's child.

"Unlock the Prison Doors reveals how the keys of the kingdom of heaven given to the Apostles are for all believers to use in their daily lives, to open the doors of our spiritual prison, and clear the way to spiritual maturity and spiritual victory!" Barber writes.

Students that enjoy a systematic approach to Bible study will appreciate this book the most.

A Blueprint for Spiritual Maturity  Jul 10, 2005
My wife was impressed by reading Terry Barber's first book "According to His Purpose" and asked me to read it. I too was impressed, and blessed by it. Now Terry has come out with another book "Unlock the Prison Doors" in the same warm, friendly easy reading style.

Terry subtitles the book "Keys to Breaking the Chains of Habitual Sin" which is good and true but don't let it mislead you. The book is beneficial to all Christians, not just those caught up in habitual sin. It is really a blue print for spiritual maturity.

The book begins with the simple reminder that God made us with three parts. We have a spirit, a soul and a body. The teachings in the 15 chapters of this book are designed to bring about healing and health to all three of these parts of us.

Some of the subjects that Pastor Terry covers are keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, spiritual maturity, the cycle of sin, the cycle of righteousness, spiritual laws, weapons of our warfare, desire, discernment, confidence (in Jesus), endurance, prayer, the power of Pentecost, faith and being perfect.

One of the strengths of the books is that almost every page has Scripture to support the point that Terry is making. It is almost like a Bible commentary.

In the last chapter, the one on Being Perfect, Terry writes, "If you forget everything else I have written in this book; I would go to my grave a happy man if you remembered and practiced this one thing: `Humble yourself before the Lord and stay humble that He may give you the grace you need to become the people of God that He wants you to be.'"

Terry comes across as a man after God's own heart, a simple man yet with great insight into the path of righteousness.

We highly recommend this book.

Warm and Personal, but Not Recommended  May 30, 2005
While Pastor Barber has many years of experience--and I especially respect the time he and his family have ministered in Turkey--his educational background is less than I expected. I'm autodidactic myself, so degrees are not everything to me. However, I am on alert when I don't see a degree from a seminary which I respect.

Then the first resource credited in the acknowledgements is Bill Gothard. The big Bill G., fount of principles and legalisms. My scriptural-principle-and-corny-diagram detector was on high alert after that.

And Pastor Barber doesn't let us down.

His book is divided into fifteen chapters, one for each of the "Keys" he's teaching, like Key Six: Spiritual Laws. In a Gothardesque way, Pastor Barber expounds on the "Cycle of Sin" and "Cycle of Righteousness," keys four and five respectively. Chapter seven even has a diagram including an umbrella of authority.

By this point I was unwilling to consider this book as a reliable resource.

Perhaps this is all simply a matter of expectations and perceptions. I was expecting a more theologically oriented book on sanctification, with sound exegesis and ideas on practical application on "breaking free from habitual sin."

Instead, this book is written in a warm and conversational style. Pastor Barber's desire to help comes through clearly. Yet, perhaps that personal touch comes across too strongly with the "Uncle Ebee" stories. I'd rather hear an author share from the heart their personal struggles with sin and how they found God to be faithful, than to hear folksy vignettes. In and example of victory over lust, I don't want to hear of a fictitious Uncle Ebee looking at a girl in a bikini. What about sharing the real struggles, dependence upon God, and breaking free from sin?

That said I do want to point out some good things in this book. First, instead of merely giving Scripture references, Pastor Barber frequently quotes the full text of Bible verses. How can a reader but be blessed when he is reading from the Word of God?

Also Pastor Barber continually points people to Christ, reaffirming the Gospel and our need for God. He didn't seem to fall into the trap of "Implement these Biblical principles I've discovered, and succeed!"

In summary, I don't doubt that God can use this book to help people. But it's not a resource I'd particularly recommend for a theological understanding of sanctification or real help in our struggle with sin.
