Item Description...
For nearly four decades social critics such a Philip Rieff and Christopher Lasch have worried about the "triumph of the therapeutic" in our current "cluture of narcissism." But whatever their level of uneasiness about the psychologizing of reality, most Christians have made some degree of peace with the reigning power of psychotherapy and pyschotherapeutic outlooks.

Christianity and psychiatry do not mix  Aug 29, 2002
Seth Faber's book Unholy Madness: The Church's Surrender to Psychiatry (InterVarsity Press, 1999) is an insightful look on how Christianity and psychiatry do not mix. The author of the book is a Christian that found psychology and psychiatry to conflict with his religion.

Although the claim of psychology deriding Christianity may sound unbelievable, I have witnessed this in action as an undergrad. Additionally, I found the field of psychology to be extremely materialistic.

The author explains in the book how he went from a "true believer" to a heretic (critic) of psychology. Seth Faber explains how and why he became disillusioned with the field providing a general overview of some faults of psychiatry.

The book cover why and how the church got to the point of accepting psychiatry's authority, explaining that there was a division of secular and religious, with the mind being secular and the soul being religious. The realm of the mind became that of the psychiatrist and the realm of the soul that of the church. Although this division ignores the fact that many mental anguishes are really spiritual crisis.

The underlining principle in why Christianity and psychiatry are not compatible is that psychiatry holds that mental health is adjustment to this world. This core tenet of psychiatry is in opposition to Christ's teaching that the way of the world and his way are in opposition. This assertion is supported in the Bible, as Paul said the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight (1 Corinthians 3:19).

Great book.  Sep 2, 1999
Dr. Farber's book is wonderful. It gives you a good overview of the problems with the current model of psychiatry/psychotherapy and examines how religious & spiritual issues are often ignored. He also gives practical advice to Christian churches and believers on how to reach-out to the "mentally ill" with biblical compassion.
Only a religion of plenitude can save the mentally ill  May 8, 1999
Farber reveals how western religion and modern psychiatric thought are based on notions of human insufficiency and inadequacy. As a result both deny the mentally ill the dignity and sanctuary they need to find the spiritual fulfillment and meaning they seek. Farber also argues that the source of mental illness lies in the spiritual impoverishment of our modern age. Well written, interstingly argued and important. Of interest to the spritually hungry of any religion or none at all.
