More About Amy Grant

Amy Grant Born on November 25, 1960, in Augusta, Georgia. Amy Grant has helped revolutionize contemporary Christian music.

Harking from Nashville, Tennessee, Amy was part of a close-knit, religious family. She had a strong grounding in God's Word through her Church, would would become a major influence on her music.

Grant learned guitar as a teen, and worked at a local recording studio. It was during this time that she made a tape of her music for her parents, which had been discovered by a producer with Word Records, a Christian music label. This led to a recording contract, and her first album was released in 1977. The self-titled album was a big success in the world of Christian music. With her unique style, Grant charted new territory. She fused elements of existing genres of gospel, hymns, and Jesus music—which used rock music to convey Christian teachings—to create a fresh, new sound, not heard before. Her songs are often deeply personal as well as reflecting her spiritual faith.

Grant continued recording and performing throughout high school and college, and has made a significant career for herself releasing numerous popular albums over the years.

She also earned several Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association (GMA), including for Performer of the Year.

Amy Grant has published or released items in the following series...
  1. Daywind Karaoke Style
  2. Daywind Soundtracks Contemporary
  3. VeggieTales

Music of Another Kind  Dec 25, 2009
I live in Finland. Here it seems that many people don't know Amy Grant, even Christians, and if they do know, they usually don't like her music. I think it's kinda sad because Amy has made many classic albums like "Age to Age", "Behind the Eyes", and "Lead Me On". This album started a different kind of Amy season. The sound was much modern than in her first albums. This was some kind of preparation for the classic albums "Lead Me On" and "Heart in Motion". I don't think she had changed - she had developed. And of course - the message was still the same - The Christ is The Lord and we need to learn to love Him and each others. Amy's music has strengtened my faith in God and it makes me happy and peaceful inside. This album is a good example of her music. Although it's not a perfect album, it has good songs - lots of good songs. "Love of Another Kind", "Find a Way", the peaceful one "Everywhere I Go", and "Wise Up" are probably the best-known on this album. Also the last song "The Prodigal" is a beautiful one. I believe everyone of us know the story of the prodigal which has a happy ending. I hope that each of our lives has a happy ending and I hope that Amy's music may help it. This is a good Christian pop album.

Amy Revisited  Sep 10, 2009
By the noughties' standards, definitely dated and a little embarrassing in terms of instrumentation, but this is the album that sees Amy rocking out and perfecting her raspy growl.

While 'Baby Baby' became her solo No.1 to officially seal her status as a 90s Pop chanteuse, 'Unguarded' was Amy's landmark crossover album that spawned her first Billboard Top 40 Single 'Find A Way' and made her a bonafide video star on MTV.

It's a little funny to see on hindsight the controversy Amy Grant's music generated back in the 80s in CCM circles, when conservative listeners were scandalised that a Christian record should contain so few explicit references to God. But perhaps the appeal of Amy's songs is that they approach religion from a humanistic angle (it's dangerous to even go there so I won't harp on this).

Artistically, I see this album as a young artist's effort to push the envelope with her music and message to put Christian music on the forefront in the 80s.

This reissue is a must-have for old Amy fans hoping to revisit her older material (with a fresh, clear sound, thanks to the remastering. Blast 'Fight' on your sound system to hear the soundscape for yourself - you'll be blown away!). It's also a fine introduction to her back catalog alongside 'Lead Me On' and 'Age To Age' for those who only listened to her in the 90s.

If nothing else, Amy's music really 'colors my day'.
Nice Remastering  Feb 3, 2009
Very nice remaster of the original tapes. Channel separation is good, background noise has been lowered, and the recording just sounds cleaner overall.

This was Grant's best release IMHO. "Lead Me On" was excellent as well, but this CD has a great message teens can relate to, and when the CD came out it was during a time that Christian radio really needed a pop-sounding, christian-grounded artist. Grant was young enough and spunky enough back then to appeal to the target audience, and the lyrics and music were spot on.

Totally Amy.  Dec 12, 2008
By the early 80's, Amy Grant had established herself as a true force in Contemporary Christian music, having sold over a million copies of her albums 'Age to Age' and 'Straight Ahead'. These milestones still did not prepare her primary audience for the new sounds of 'Unguarded', however. At the time of its release, 'Unguarded' sounded more like the top 40 radio of the time, with 80's synth-rock production and oblique lyrics that had Amy singing about a vague "you", rather than God or Jesus directly. There was some dismay among traditionalist fans, who saw this album as Amy moving away from her roots, but the mainstream audience, many of whom had never heard 'Age to Age' or 'Straight Ahead' made 'Unguarded's singles top 20 hits on the secular charts, a feat unheard of at the time for a Christian artist.

In retrospect, 'Unguarded' is perhaps more important as an historical turning point for Christian music, rather than as an album in itself, since the songs do sound somewhat dated today, and yet the Christian music audience is forever indebted to this album because it broke Christian music to a wider audience and paved the way for many rock-oriented Christian acts to follow.
Years Later, Still Listening  Sep 16, 2008
I first got this album on cassette back in 1985. I loved it then, and listened to it often. As the years passed, the cassette got misplaced, and outdated, and I now have this on mp3. After all this time, it's still an awesome album.
