Item Description...
A restlessness writhes deep within the soul. Whether enslaved to raging masters like drugs or alcohol or hidden destroyers like internet porn or food obsessions, the exhausted addict knows the relentless torture of striving to break free only to fail time after time. How to end this mad rush toward destruction? With compelling illustrations and down-to-earth language, Alan Lester shares compassionate, candid, and biblical strategies to help addicts embrace the Savior's life-renewing grace and hurl aside the chains of destruction. His points include: - An addict is completely helpless to save himself. He needs a savior. - The grace of God teaches addicts to say no to the cycle of temptation. - Lasting freedom comes through a slow progression of change.

More About Alan Lester

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Alan Lester is Professor of Historical Geography at the University of Sussex. His first book was From Colonization to Democracy: A New Historical Geography of South Africa. It was reviewed as 'without doubt the best historical geography of South Africa to date'. Although his work over the next five years remained centred on southern Africa, it focused on the range of connections between the Cape colonial frontier and other sites of British colonization. With Imperial Networks: Creating Identities in Nineteenth Century South Africa and Britain, he helped to pioneer the spatial turn in colonial studies. Catherine Hall wrote that the book 'provides a model which others would do well to follow' and John Darwin concluded that it 'opens up a very promising avenue towards a reinvigorated imperial historiography'. Excerpts are included in the New Imperial Histories Reader, Stephen Howe crediting Lester with being 'the pioneer' of 'a key concept much used in recent 'new imperial history' writing that of the imperial network'. Colonial Lives across the British Empire: Imperial Careering in the Long Nineteenth Century, co-edited with David Lambert, showed how personal trajectories combined with movements of material, capital, commodities and ideas continually to reconfigure colonial and metropolitan places. Antoinette Burton described the book as developing 'fresh insight and a lot of intellectual energy as well', and it has been further reviewed as 'demonstrat[ing] what biography at its best can do'.

Alan Lester was born in 1960 and has an academic affiliation as follows - University of Sussex.

Foreword by Dr. Wayne Mack  Oct 21, 2008
From the Foreword by Dr. Wayne Mack:

One of the caricatures that is often given to those who reject
the popular ideas about drug abuse and insist on using a biblical
approach is that all they do is call it a sin and, therefore, give
very superficial and unhelpful counsel. Anyone who will carefully
read this book will understand that effectively promoting biblical
change involves much more than that. They will be encouraged
to facilitate what I call in the biblical counselling courses I
teach the key elements of the biblical counselling process. The
material found in this manuscript will emphasize and illustrate
factors that will provide hope for change, the importance of
gathering sufficient information about the person, and properly
interpreting what the data indicates about the person and his
problem. It will also clarify the kinds of instruction a drug abuser
needs and the kind of commitment he must make. It will also
give many valuable strategies and practical ideas for putting
off the enslavement to drugs and putting on a new pattern of
freedom and godly living.
I commend Alan Lester for providing the material found in
this volume on what has become and is becoming, even more
so, a very common and destructive problem. I am grateful
that throughout this book he has manifested an unswerving
confidence and unshakable trust in the practical reliability and
sufficiency of God’s Word. In this manuscript your attention will
be redirected away from the failed and fl awed human solutions
to the infallible Word of God. It does not fl oat one more theory
in an endless barrage of theories on how to solve the problem of
drug addiction. Rather, it points to the certainty of God’s eternal
truth as the absolute basis by which to live and succeed.
