Item Description...
Overview
An accessible introduction to the core components of Matthew's Gospel, with particular emphasis on the early Christian worldview that shaped this presentation of the gospel.

Community Description
This work, a companion volume to Westerholm's Understanding Paul provides an introduction to the early Christian worldview of the First Gospel. The study is neither a verse-by-verse commentary nor a narrowly focused academic monograph. It is an engaging reader's guide to Matthew's worldview and his story of Jesus' life, preaching, andcall to discipleship. Westerholm's goal, as he writes in the first chapter, is that readers might "begin to understand how Matthew made sense of things, and to see how it makes sense to make sense of things that way." His introductory chapter examines the idea of a worldview. He then considers the centralaspects of Matthew's worldview Israel's understanding of God, his dealings with the Jewish people, and Jesus' preaching about God's kingdom.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Which Worldview  Nov 5, 2006
I found this book to be neither the best nor the worst introduction to the gospel of Matthew I have ever read. In this book, the author flattens out the discussion of worldviews too much in that he only offers up two possible worldviews. There's just not enough nuance for my taste. The prose is more gripping when Westerholm writes about the connections between the life and writing of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Matthew's gospel. The interplay between 1st century and 20th century texts illuminates the words of each and offers clear insights into both worlds. I would recommend the book for discussion groups and the like, but for an introduction to Matthew's worldview, there are far better books.

Superbly readable, informed, challenging analysis of Matthew's Gospel  Jul 12, 2006
Understanding Matthew is a rare and valuable book. It evinces a thoroughly informed perspective on the interpretation of Matthew's Gospel. More than that, it reflects a keen grasp of the genuine relevance of Matthew to human existence. And it manages at the same time to be readable without being hackneyed or shallow.

Westerholm is striving to explain the "worldview" of Matthew's Gospel, not just its theology in relation to the theologies of other biblical books but its larger view of reality. In this he eminently succeeds.

Westerholm has aptly chosen along the way to compare to Matthew the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a theologian both deeply influenced by Matthew and profoundly engaged in living out the message of Matthew. The result couldn't be more stimulating and challenging.

My enthusiasm for this book is obviously pretty strong. In sum, I can't think of a better read for the serious student of the Bible who also wants to be a serious follower of the Christ of the Bible.
