SUBTITLE: Living With Faith in a Nation That Was Never Under God

With the 2008 election approaching, the Christian Right will once again be a major topic of discussion. Conservatives are concerned that America is losing its Christian heritage, and liberals are disturbed at what they see as the increasing political power of Christian conservatives. Yet both sides often share a key assumption: that America has historically been a Christian nation. In UnChristian America?, Liberty University professor Michael Babcock traces America's historical, political, and religious development to reveal the surprising truth: The country has been trending post-Christian since Jamestown, and therefore America was never really Christians' to lose. As he presents a sympathetic but candid view of the legacy of the Christian Right, Babcock challenges evangelicals to take action for moral change and prevent the slide into a post-Christian future before it's too late.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Review by a Dirty Liberal, or Perhaps a Slightly Unwashed Moderate  Sep 3, 2008
First of all, I applaud the author for having the bullocks to write this book. He is a professor at Liberty University, the school founded by Jerry Falwell, yet in these pages he criticizes the Moral Majority, Focus on the Family, and other quasi-fundamentalist groups for their mixing of politics and the Christian message. I dare say he has taken some flack from his colleagues for doing this, and I appreciate the courage of conviction it took him to write it.

Within it he offers a long-needed corrective to one of the most pernicious and widespread myths in our society: that the United States was historically a "Christian" nation. To debunk this claim he details the openly secularist ideals and goals of the Founding Fathers, and how these found expression in both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

He shows that remarks by Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, etc., mentioning God are lauding the Deity of civic religion, which is a generic monotheism intended to inspire patriotism while offending no one. He details the open irreligiosity of Ben Franklin and the modernist views of Thomas Jefferson. He traces how their vision of a society based on Reason rather than faith has found its fruition in modern America, where spirituality is segregated to church, mosque and synagogue and kept out of active public discourse, save for the obligatory nods to the aforementioned God of civic religion.

He also traces the history of the Moral Majority and similar groups, as they sought to form alliances with Republicans to "take back America for God." He shows how the idealistic fundamentalists were naive lambs used by clever politicians hungry for votes. Those same politicians, often put in power by conservative Christian voters, ignored their concerns once in office. The situation further deteriorated when men such as Ralph Reed jumped into the political arena whole hog, and became as corrupt as the system they once intended to redeem.

I dinged the book one star because I think the writer shows he is still straitjacketed by his fundamentalist upbringing. For example, he criticizes the biblical king Saul for fudging on God's order to exterminate an entire people group, including their animals.

Personally I would have told the Almighty to go to H*** if he ordered me to commit mass genocide, including women, children and animals. The author's insistence on clinging to an ultra-literal interpretation of the Bible limits the intellectual journey he has begun by writing this fine book. I hope that someday he is able to cast off the remaining vestiges of his fundamentalist brand of Christianity and embrace an expression of the faith which celebrates reason, diversity and free thought.

All in all, however, I found this book to be an excellent response to the Christian Right and I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.
