Item Description...
This book examines the relationship between Luther's understanding of "what makes a Christian" (author's phrase) and his view of Christian political involvement. Luther's theological reflections on this subject and hispolitical responses have been controversial since their initial expression. Modern interpretations of Luther's contributions have been dominated by negative judgments. Luther has been accused of fostering a quietist response to the government that is politically conservative at best and reactionary at worst (i.e. the government must always be obeyed whether it is right or wrong). Tyranny and Resistance addresses these modern judgments by examining Luther's political theory and by analyzing the Magdeburg Confession of 1550. It begins with an overview of Luther's theology in general and resistance in particular by examining the Peasants' War of 1525 and the Augsburg Recess of 1530. Whitford argues that in Luther there is a connection between Christian identity and community action.

Publishers Description
Examines the confession as a statement of the God-given right to resist unjust rule. Follows Luther's insights and practice.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
On Theologically Informed Political Resistance  Dec 10, 2004
Modern media soundbites of the Magdeburg Confession would certainly trace these pastors of resistance from Magdeburg in the 16thC to be theological heirs of Muntzer. How wrong this would be!

They when read in their full context of the Magdeburg Confession of 1550 are rather in the train of Luther. They follow the two kingdoms and the warnings of Luther written in his documents regarding when resistance is not only not sinful, but expected by Christians. The discernment to call such into play is major and significant for both Luther and Magdeburg pastors and is to be sure a last resort that hopefully, prayerfully would never be called into action. However, as in the case of Magdeburg it was.

These brave souls stood against the Emperor and his threatening forces in the seige of their city over nothing other than their right to preach the Gospel as they sought to.

Whitford's insights into this significant historical event for our time and others is well worth this short but provocative read. One will gain much about not only Magdeburg's Confession but about Luther and Muntzer and Reformation times.

Additionally this is well written with excellent footnotes, and bibliography which stretches over forteen pages.
