Item Description...
He was one of the most popular lay preachers and Christian apologists at the turn of the 20th century: Sir Robert Anderson devoutly believed that the Bible was the inerrant word of God, and in this popular work, he reinterprets the Old Testament Book of Hebrews for modern believers. Starting from the supposition that appreciation of God as the originator of the Judaism is vital to a true understanding of Christianity, Anderson defends and explains the Book of Hebrews as important to those who wish to have the full power of the Bible-and of faith in God-at their disposal for spiritual comfort. While at Scotland Yard, Irish police official and religious scholar SIR ROBERT ANDERSON (1841-1918) helped investigate the Jack the Ripper murders, but he is best remembered for his works of Bible study, including The Coming Prince, Daniel in the Critics' Den, and The Silence of God.

More About Robert Anderson

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Sir Robert Anderson was born in Dublin, Ireland on Mat 29, 1841 and was of Scottish descent. His father was an elder in the Irish Presbyterian Church and he was raised in a religious home. Anderson's conversion took place after listening to a sermon delivered by John Hall. Anderson described the event: "[Hall] boldly proclaimed forgiveness of sins, and eternal life as God's gift in grace, unreserved and unconditional, to be received by us as we sat in the pews. His sermon thrilled me, and yet I deemed his doctrine to be unscriptural. So I waylaid him as he left the vestry, and on our homeward walk I tackled him about his heresies ... At last he let go my arm, and, facing me as we stood upon the pavement, he repeated with great solemnity his gospel message and appeal. 'I tell you, ' he said, 'as a minister of Christ, and in His name, that there is life for you here and now if you will accept Him. Will you accept Christ, or will you reject Him?' After a pause - how prolonged I know not - I exclaimed, 'In God's name I will accept Christ.' Not another word passed between us; but after another pause he wrung my hand and left me. And I turned homewards with the peace of God filling my heart." Sir Robert Anderson graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1862 and was called to the Irish Bar in 1863. He later became Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department at Scotland Yard. When he retired in 1901, he was made Knight Commander of the the Order of the Bath. W. H. Smith, on the floor of the House of Commons, said Sir Robert "had discharged his duties with great ability and perfect faithfulness to the public." Sir Robert has been called a "secret service theologian," because in addition to fighting crime in London he wrote several books on Biblical doctrine. He was close to some of the most well-known teachers of his time, including James M. Gray, C. I. Scofield, A. C. Dixon, E. W. Bullinger, and he preached along with J. N. Darby. Sir Robert was a member of the Plymouth Brethren and later with the Open Brethren. Among his many theological accomplishments, Sir Robert defended the authenticity of the book of Daniel at a time when it was being vigorously attacked. He wrote many books, some on political subjects but most teaching doctrine.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
For all those who want an answer  Aug 9, 2008
Sir Robert Anderson has answered the bothersome question, "why does a loving God do nothing when children are being murdered and innocent people are being destroyed?"

The short answer to the question is, Jesus came the first time as our kinsman redeemer to save us, and bring us into a period of grace. When He comes again, it will be as the avenger of blood. His silence of the present time gives us the opportunity to repent and accept the gift of His salvation. When God does act, then Armageddon will ensue and Judgment (no more chances).

Anderson's work cuts through the misconceptions taught by many Christian religions by going directly to the Bible. His study of the Bible is a great help to our own discoveries inside the Word of God.
Silence of God  Oct 12, 2007
Sir Anderson does not mince words, and beware, his literary conventions are well beyond new-millenial standards. Have a dictionary handy. You'll need to ponder his words carefully, but it is well worth it. Anderson gives a thorough treatise on the subject, shedding light where it is absent on a phenomenon that few are capable of answering. Why is God so quiet? I'm sure you have wondered, and if like most, eventually shrugged it off. Yet, Anderson squarely addresses the ramifications of that attitude, and the result is to restore faith where it wanes. Thus, a superb book, and one that is perhaps more appropriate nearly a century after it was penned than in the day it was.
Sir Robert Anderson Library  Jul 8, 2007
Sir Robert Anderson's books are classics. He carefully analyzes Biblical doctrines and produces a treasury of insights frequently overlooked by students of the Bible. He is a Bible teacher's teacher by excellence.
He shows not only how the Bible must be understood but also how it must be lived by the believer.
A Must Read  Dec 21, 2005
When I first read this book it helped clear up a good deal of confusion I had concerning God's current dealings with men today, and why we live under a silent Heaven.

This book is very relevant today in view of all the terrible violence around the world, and will help believers young and old with such questions as "Why does God allow suffering?" and "What has happened to miraculous interventions?"

The chapter on Satan is especially informative.

I strongly recommend this book.
Great Book  Mar 27, 2001
I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in finding a Biblical approach to miracles and understanding how God operates. The only "problem" with the book is that it makes you think, which tends to slow down your rate of reading. However, it's worth it to read a book founded on Scripture which gives a great understanding into who God is and how the grace of Jesus Christ makes a difference for us now. If you like this book, you must check out everything else he has written.
