Item Description...
Overview
Anne Smucker Beiler was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where she attended a two-room Amish school. Bred into the fabric of her close-knit family and into her soul were the elements of sincere Christian faith, an excellent work ethic, and an eye for good business opportunity. Anne's journey is a remarkable story of failure and success. She persevered through a series of difficult personal struggles-including the tragic death of her second child, being betrayed by someone she trusted implicitly, and a terrible six-year depression-to become the leading female franchise owner in the United States. Anne is one of the few women who have founded national companies in America. What makes her story most extraordinary is her determination to help others by telling her full story-the good, the bad and the ugly.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Too unpleasant to enjoy, and too frequent switching from past and present.  Sep 17, 2009
There was so much that I did not like about this book. As one reviewer said about her 6-year affair with her pastor "It's a little hard to believe that someone who was smart enough to develop this amazing business empire was on the other hand stupid enough to put up with that nonsense for 6 years. A few months, a year maybe, but 6??" I find that more than just a "little" hard to believe! Then in later years she has another affair with another man,yet her husband stays with her! I believe this woman is totally lacking in morals or a "Christian" conscience, and is no better than that pastor!

I found it strange how she said she is from an Amish-Mennonite background, how can it be both, instead of one or the other? Also how did her Old Order Amish husband, and her leave these sects without being put under "the ban" and being "shunned",or did all of their family members also leave, and that is how they were all able to associate?

There is absolutely no flow to this book,as it jumps from past to present, and different occurrences every few pages!

Misleading  Mar 9, 2009
Although the book was interesting and a quick read, there was one oversight that I found extremely misleading and that I believe does a grave disservice to the Mennonite Community. In the book, Anne emphasizes how she was raised as a Mennonite, and how her close family connections and faith helped to shape the person and business woman that she became. However, when she talks about the pastor who took advantage of her for 6 years and abused her daughter, she never mentions that he led another church, which had no connection with the Mennonite faith. The reader is left with an incorrect and damaging impression which deserves clarification.

Very good book  Jan 6, 2009
This book is a great example of what living by faith can do in a person's life. Annie's life is one of tragedy and triumph, personal failure and success, but with God in her life, she is able to stand in everything.

Too much information  Nov 27, 2008
The basic "storyline" is fascinating - the creation of a large business empire predicated upon generosity. And the subject, Annie herself, is improbable - little education, Amish background - which makes the book even more compelling.

Unfortunately, I found the endless breastbeating about her personal pitfalls unfortunate, particularly her acquiesence to abuse by her pastor. Also, apparently, this went on for about 6 years if I understood correctly - it was hard to track some of what was going on because of the frequently shifting time frame. It's a little hard to believe that someone who was smart enough to develop this amazing business empire was on the other hand stupid enough to put up with that nonsense for 6 years. A few months, a year maybe, but 6??

In any case, I took the book hoping to learn a lot more about how the business was created and developed, and was disappointed in that respect. It was still interesting, nonetheless, and perhaps a sequel could be written that treats more of the business and charitable aspects, and less of the personal.

Insight Into the Pretzel Maker We Love  Nov 20, 2008
"Twist of Faith" chronicles so much more than Anne's journey of pretzel making and franchising. This courageous woman of God bares her soul in such a transparent way that you end up aching for her as you read the story.

From the tragic loss of her daughter at such a young age through the abuse suffered at the hands of someone she should have been able to trust, Anne shares every detail. Her battles with depression, working round the clock to escape her own emotional pain, and the results that appeared in her other daughters and her family--all of it shared in this memoir.

In the midst of it all we read of the astonishing success of her pretzels and how they are rapidly growing famous, world wide. I've been to Auntie Anne's four times since my discovery three weeks ago...and I can guarantee you they are every bit as good as described in this book!

Yet success does not come without costs, and Anne is very candid about her journey as a small business owner to a multi-million dollar corporate CEO...and the toll it took on her along the way. Some might say she has little to complain about--successful and set financially for life, right?

But all is not as it seems on the outside. Ever see a sister or brother in Christ and envy the life they appear to be living? Don't do that--we carry private hurts and pain that we are experts as masquerading. Trust me--I've been told by many that I lived a charmed life---

---maybe on the outside. Only God and I see on the inside. No one gets out without scars...not even Jesus.

I encourage you to hunt down this amazingly candid biography. The past/present shifts in perspective are a bit choppy, and you will have to really hang in there at some points in the story, but overall it is a good and insightful read.
