Item Description...
Overview
The enduring legacy of the world's bestselling spiritual writer. Eleven years after his death in 1996, the influence of Henri Nouwen-one of the bestselling spiritual writers of our time-continues to grow. With an appeal that crosses religious and denominational boundaries, Nouwen's work touches an ever-widening audience of students, ministers, and spiritual seekers. Henri Nouwen Societies have been established in several countries and scores of retreats and conferences have focused on his spiritual insights. The essays gathered here were presented at a recent conference in Toronto marking the anniversary of his death. They include contributions from members of Nouwen's family, companions and colleagues from the L'Arche community, friends, scholars, and notable writers including Mary Jo Leddy, Michael Higgins, Michael O'Laughlin, and Sue Mosteller. Together they assess the reasons for Nouwen's extraordinary popularity and the relevance of his spiritual message today.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Disappointing  Dec 26, 2007
In May 2006, a three-day conference with the theme "Turning the Wheel: Henri Nouwen and Our Search for God" was held in Toronto. This volume collects the papers that were read there.

When I first learned about the collection, I was excited. It was my understanding that the participants in the conference had made a special effort to focus on the coinherence of ministry, spirituality, and theology in Nouwen's writings and work. I wasn't disappointed. The essays in the book do an admirable job of that.

What they're not so good at is in the depth and originality departments. Most of the essays tend to be overly platitudinous, pious, and summative rather than insightful, beginning with the Introduction written by Nathan Ball and including essays by Paul Johansen, Wil Hernandez, Carolyn Whitney-Brown, Christopher Cahill and John Mogabgab. Other essays, such as JoAnn Watson's and Emily Pardue's, KangHack Lee's, or Gabrielle Earnshaw's and Anna St. Onge's are simply...well, tedious. Even taking into account that papers read at a conference generally don't have a great deal of depth, these and a few others collected in this anthology are especially unenlightening.

What salvages the collection are a handful of topnotch efforts: Gregory Jensen's essay on Nouwen and kenosis in western and eastern Christianity; Michael Higgins essay on Nouwen, Merton, and Nicholl; Carol Berry's essay on Nouwen and van Gogh; Michael O'Laughlin's essay on Nouwen and the American vision; and especially Jeremy Wiebe's piece on Nouwen and Ricoeur. These reflections do shed new and valuable light on Nouwen's contributions, and they make the book worth its price.

So my recommendation would be to read this collection very selectively. If you want a secondary commentary on Nouwen, try instead something like Dierdre Lanoue's The Spiritual Legacy of Henri Nouwen, Michael Ford's Wounded Prophet: A Portrait of Henri Nouwen, or Michael O'Laughlin's God's Beloved: A Spiritual Biography of Henri Nouwen.
