You better be sure you want to buy that property!!!!  Jan 22, 2007
Craig Parshall has a great way of getting you caught up in the lives of the characters. I wanted to see how all the threads tied up at the end. And WOW! He tied them up expertly. Once again, the author did not let me down. You can always rely on great reading when you pick up a C. Parshall book.
A unique story with a lot of angst...  Nov 10, 2006
Trial by Ordeal was different from any book I've ever read. The author used first person past tense to describe the events that took place literally in the in beyond just a few minutes ago. At first, I found the unique presentation difficult to read. But by the end, I realized the style actually worked well for the story.

The main character, Kevin, gets himself in one mess after another. Things just keep getting worse the harder he tries to fix his problems himself. The tension from protagonists was excellent. The fact that bad things kept happening to Kevin kept me reading. I would've like to have seen more dialogue, but maybe that was difficult because of the style the author used to present the story to the reader.

Overall, I'd say the story was a pleasurable ride for me. I really liked Kevin by story's end. How the author showed Kevin's messed up life and the changes that slowly took place when he give his heart to the Lord--how Christ can truly make a difference in a person's life--was probably my favorite part of the story. The spiritual arc was awesome. :)
A Good Read  Aug 15, 2006
Trial By Ordeal, written by Craig Parshall, is a rather quick read - a novel combining elements of the classic storyline of a man's unwitting involvement with the mob, and the twists and turns of a legal morass from which the main character escapes. I found the book very enjoyable, and essentially read it from cover to cover in a couple of sittings.

The story is set in Chicago (which, for one who lived in the Chicago area for many years, was a fun addition - though I think some with no familiarity with the Windy City might be lost with many of the references) and involves a professor, Kevin Hastings, at a fictional college in the city. Intending to 'get rich quick', Hastings makes a real estate deal that he'd regret, as it causes his life to spiral out of control.

The plot is well put together, and the pace is fast - it was hard to put the book down as things fell into place. In this respect, Parshall's book holds its own with much of the legal/crime fiction of much better-known authors that I've read. I do have to say, however, that the resolution of the vast mess that Hastings gets into was a bit rapid and 'out of the blue' for my taste - but I've said that of works by other authors, too, so Parshall is in good company there. In addition some of the characters could be somewhat more deeply treated and completely developed as well - but this doesn't detract too badly from the overall sense of the story.

The primary issue that I have to say detracts from an otherwise excellent book is that this story was a bit contrived so that a gospel presentation could be made in the midst of the legal wrangling and mob intrigue. I gather that the inclusion of a gospel thread was one of Parshall's intentions in this book - and I haven't read any of his other books to find out whether this is a typical case for him as an author.

I'm thankful that Parshall didn't give Hastings a stunning (and unrealistic) "Paul-on-the-Damascus-Road" conversion - this would be over the top, in my opinion. The path that Kevin takes to beginnings of understandings of the Christian faith is reasonably realistic and tastefully done.... nevertheless, I felt as though the "Christian bits" were "pasted into" an otherwise commonplace mob-thriller storyline. My main wish for the story is that the Christian life pieces were more tightly woven into the plot - more integrated.

All in all, Trial By Ordeal held my attention, and was an enjoyable vacation read. If you are a fan of legal fiction, and would like a story in that genre that leaves out some of the more objectionable parts that common authors seem to feel have to exist in order to sell a book - get this one, and check out Parshall's others. (and if you're a physicist or engineer, you should simply disregard the mistaken identification Parshall makes between Pythagoras and the hypothetical case of a lever long enough to move the Earth - which should have been attributed to Archimedes!)
The story of an ordinary man caught between extraordinarily ruthless enemies  Aug 8, 2006
A truly riveting read from beginning to end, Trial By Ordeal is the story of an ordinary man caught between extraordinarily ruthless enemies - and equally ruthless lawyers! When Kevin discovers a piece of property with an old church building in downtown Chicago, his investment turns into a millstone around his neck when he learns that he has signed a contract with the Mob - a contract he can't deliver on. The woman he loves most is an architectural preservationist, and perhaps worst of all, the lawyer he hires to sort things out is a brutal engineer of dirty tricks, legal intimidation, and worse, all at a horrendously expensive price tag. Forced to run for his life, Kevin seeks shelter at a rescue mission, and questions whether there is Someone who can bring justice into the mess surrounding him. An exciting novel that reflects the author's Christian faith and his thirty-four years of experience as a lawyer, Trial By Ordeal compels the reader to the very last page.
Are you looking for a good legal thriller by a Christian author so you should not have to be as leary of what the content would be? If so, this is a good, "can't- put-down-until-you-finish" book.

The author, Craig Parshall, is a highly successful lawyer from the Washington D.C. area, who specializes in civil liberty and constitutional rights cases. He is considered a man with conservative values in mainstream and Christian media. Knowing this, I dived into this book, and read it in a few days, reading late into the evenings.

The story is of a normal, everyday young college professor, who decides to invest in some real-estate. In trying to make a quick buck, he finds himself in quite a web. The story quickly intensifies as this real estate investment begins to unravel its involvement with the Mafia and high powered attorneys, leading to losing his job, attacks on himself, becoming penniless, and through this being introduced to God. There is also a sweet love story that evolves.

Having been a legal secretary in my younger days, I enjoyed reading this, and found much of it to be realistic (though the attorneys I worked for never were involved with the Mafia!!). It is not filled with too much legal jargon so that it is easy to understand and just keep flipping those pages! The outrageous fees that are charged and dealing with a variety of attorneys were quite true. The author has a way of captivating his readers greatly. I will be looking for more books by this author.
