A must have book for leaders and those training leaders. We bought several so they can be used at my husbands work place and also to family and friends.

Learning from your toys - great idea for a book  Jul 27, 2009
I just finished Toy Box Leadership: Leadership Lessons from the Toys You Loved as a Child...somewhat flawed but a good book nonetheless.

Flawed may be a bad word to use for this book. The idea is a great one (more on it later) but the narratives about the lessons could have been stronger. In addition, I noticed some editorial issues (spelling, words out of order, etc) which I wholly attribute to the publisher / editor for not catching.

That said, I love the ideas presented in this book.

The main idea of this book is this:

Think back to the toys you had as a kid. Think about LEGO, Play-Doh, Mr Potato Head, the Yo-Yo...all those things we used to play with when we were younger (and maybe we still do play with today?). The ideas learned from these toys can be used as leadership lessons. For Example:

* LEGO - using the idea of LEGO bricks, the authors present the idea of connectedness. Connecting the right people together in business is essential. Connecting the right businesses together is also important.

* Play-Doh - This great toy can be shaped and made into anything. The same can be true of organizations...a great leader can shape the organization to meet future goals. There may need to be lots of different experiments done to find the right shape, but it can be done.

* Rubik's Cube - The author's use the Rubik's Cube as a toy that describes ethics. While I tend to disagree with that premise, it does make a great toy to demonstrate strategy & tactics. You know where you want to get to (all sides with same colors) and you have to determine the tactics to get there (which turns to make and in what order).

While not perfect, I'd suggest this book to anyone looking for new ways to think about leadership, strategy & business.

Simple, yet powerful!  Jan 12, 2009
This book is a quick-read and a wonderful tool to use for small-group team-building, leadership training, and a "fresh" approach to learning leadeadership principles. The analogies of the toys for each of the leadership principles are relevant and insightful. My team had a meeting last week, and our boss brought in all of the toys and had them spread out over a long conference room table. Although we only worked with 4 of the Toy Box Leadership principles, the interest is there for exploring the others as well. I highly recommend it!

From the editor of leadingtoday.org  Dec 19, 2008
Toy Box Leadership is an unusual book written on a fascinating premise. The common toys we used as children can teach us valuable lessons about leadership principles. Your first reaction may be skepticism or even ridicule toward this simple premise. But once you open the book and start reading, your apprehension will turn into appreciation.

This book examines some of the most fondly remembered toys of childhood including LEGO® Bricks, Slinky® Dog, Play Doh®, Yo-Yo, Rocking Horse, Little Green Army Men and others. These toys subliminally taught us about the basic nature of leadership, and recalling their designs and function may remind us of leadership qualities we lost along the way to adulthood.

Toy Box Leadership dedicates a single chapter to each beloved toy of one's childhood. It analyzes the traits that made the toy interesting and playful. Then the authors draw powerful analogies from the toys to communicate important leadership lessons. For example, after telling the reader about the history behind LEGO® bricks and how they are manufactured - they ask us "how many ways can you arrange six-studded LEGO® bricks? In an astounding 915,103,756 different positions." The authors follow this question by discussing how building relationships begin with connecting. This is not done superficially, as they dedicate many pages to pull rich meaning from the aspects of each toy. You will be impressed with the excellent assessment they provide.

This enlightening book is truly different from many books written about leadership today. It is a very short read, but you will be taken back to the days when life was simpler. You will also learn new lessons from some of the toys you once loved.

Great Book  Dec 4, 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new fresh look on Leadership skills. The use of toys we know as kids, is truly a great way of letting the reader see insight into leadership skills, through things that you can relate to and have already learned as a child.

I have also had the opportunity to hear Mr. Waddell speak in person, and I would highly recommend his book or him as a guest speaker.
