More About Lewis M. Andrews

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! The person who wrote this book, Lew Andrews, commanded a series of ships during World War II. As the publisher has learned, Lew, even at 82, is a fierce, strong willed force to be reckoned with. He is also an articulate 1939 graduate of Conneticut Wesleyan University.

Lew's first command was a makeshift minesweeper that had been a peacetime fishing trawler. His next command was a sub chaser convoying between Key West and Caribbean ports. After a stint as the executive officer of a corvette, Lew took the same position on "USS Sims" a destroyer escort. In 1944, he took command of "Sims" and, by war's end, was a lieutenant commander and executive officer of the Antisubmarine Warfare Training Center in Norfolk.

Fifty-four years has not dimmed Lew's respect for the heroes he served under, with, and over. In one sense, time as only strengthened his resolve that their stories be told. With that in mind, Lew became actively involved in the destroyer escort organizations, and through this network of men with a bond that neither time nor death can sever, has collected stories and documented some of the most exciting stories of WWII.

Without a doubt, "Tempest, Fire and Foe" has been a labor of love. Lew says eight years; it was a lifetime. Read it with both laughter and tears and remember the sacrifice made by the men who were boys then (and Lew) fought to preserve our freedom.

Lewis M. Andrews was born in 1918.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Good, but The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook is much better.  Jan 24, 2007
It helps you understand why you feel the way you do and how to think and feel better.
A Beautiful Book  Apr 22, 2004
I purchased this book over 10 years ago and have found it to be the best self-help book I own. I still refer to it from time to time when tedious emotions bog me down. Invariably this book hits the nail on the head and I have to take a look at my own defenseness, judgementalism and/or manipulative tendencies to see what the source of the emotional problem is. This book points the way. A profound and beautiful book.
AMAZING  Sep 5, 2001
I came across this book a few years ago and it gave me understanding beyond any book I've ever read. It was difficult to read at first because it was an overload of truth. In a simple yet very deep and profound way the author explains how we can overcome some of the most troubling emotions in our lives, emotions for which we often seek therapy or medication. Andrews exposes us to the fact that most of our emotional and pyschological problems are a result of intricate decisions and actions we make to protect a self that we really should just expose. And It's so much more.
The lessons in this book are real. It contains truths of which many spend a lifetime searching. Truths that are presented to us daily in life but for some reason we cannot come to an understanding.
A profound and practical book.  Jan 12, 2000
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Andrews talks about what he calls Ethical Therapy. His main point is that it is psychologically healthy to act ethically, to treat others well, to conduct yourself with very little pretense, to try to do what's right and tell the truth, etc. He presents considerable scientific evidence for this assertion (which you don't really need, because once you look at your own life through this assumption, you get plenty of direct experience demonstrating its validity).

For most of the book, he shows how a greater level of integrity can solve psychological problems. Each problem gets its own chapter. Chapter titles are: Beyond Depression, Beyond Guilt, Beyond Fear, Beyond Anxiety, Beyond Addiction, etc.

It is a surprisingly practical book. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I am an expert on what is effective. The suggestions Andrews puts forth in this book are simple, powerful, and extremely effective. I highly recommend this book.
