Cast Aside and Forgotten...  Feb 16, 2010
Life... It only takes a moment to be trodden down, forgotten, and cast aside like garbage...

19th Century New South Wales could be a pleasant place to live, if you had money. But those who challenged the upper class received severe and unwarranted punishment.

When Hannah looses her mother to an untimely death, it sends her spiraling downward, like a whirlpool. Frazzled, one poor choice tumbles into desperate actions. The penalty is unimaginable.

John should be happy. He has a successful tool business and a dear wife. But his restless spirit dreams of world travel, and the unknown. However, when a defensive action turns sour, his new journey becomes a nightmare.

Eventually John and Hannah meet while crossing the ocean. Packed like rats beneath the deck, the conditions are vile and impoverished. Month after tortuous month gradually passes while faith in God is their only comfort. But hope is vanishing with the setting sun.

Reaching Australia, will the cruelty of injustice continue? Hannah and John rarely see each other and the future is bleak. Trying to make the best of individual circumstances, they are thankful for the smallest kindness. Will fate, the hand of God, or unexpected compassion bring them full circle? Or are they doomed to a live of servitude?

To Love Anew is vividly written and the horrors of history are depicted with shocking realism. When heroic efforts unfold that challenge the strength of the human spirit, only the indomitable will prevail.
A Very Inspiring Read  Jan 24, 2009
Hannah Talbot is not having a good life right now. She's lost her mother, the shop they ran together and after taking on a job as a maid, her freedom. Her employer wrongfully accuses her of a crime she did not commit, but she's found guilty and sentenced to prison despite her plight to prove her innocence. Her faith is fading as she begins to feel that God has abandoned her as well.

Now aboard a prison ship bound for Australia, Hannah's faith is again put to the test as she is forced to endure deplorable conditions and treatment, and there isn't anything she can do about it in her present position. Where is God now? He's not answering her cries for help as she prays for justice.

John Bradshaw is also onboard that ship. Little does he know, he's about to meet a woman who will change everything. After being betrayed by those closest to him, he too has vowed never to trust anyone again. Not even God.

But when the two cross paths on the ship, despite everything they must endure, they are able to overcome what has befallen them and learn to love again, despite their predicament and this enables them to find their way to God once again.

A very inspiring read and the factual, descriptive content is most enlightening as you can see the characters and envision the time period in history in which they are living.

A wonderful read. I'm looking forward to more after this first installment in the Sydney Cove series.
a good read  Jan 14, 2008
I had never read anything by Bonnie Leon before. But the book looked like it had a great plotline so I decided to read it. I loved Hannah!! She was a great main character and I felt you did get to know her throughout the book. To be honest though, I don't know if I liked John. He was not talked about nearly enough, and I don't exactly get how the two of them fell in love. He saved her life, and then they had a few meaningless conversations. Then all of a sudden they both are thinking about their love for each other. All around, the plot was excellent. But if you are going to add romance into a book, it has to be talked about and expanded on much more!!
Part of me LOVED it the other parted just WANTED to.  Jan 4, 2008
Let me preface this by saying that, despite the 3 stars, this was a very good book and, while I wouldn't rave about it, I would tell my friends it was worth reading. It seemed well researched and I learned alot while reading it. I loved the plot.

The basic premise is this: After her mother dies, Hannah is left to fend for herself... alone. She is hire as a housekeeper where she is raped by the master of the house (the judge). She flees and later gives in to hunger and steals. She is caught and who presides over her trial? Her angry ex-boss. She is sentenced to work in Australia. Meanwhile, John kills a man in self defense WHILE defending his cousin (who steals his money and flees with Johns wife while John in prison). He is also sentenced to Australia.

Alright, so... I don't know how it happened but John fell in love with Hannah at first sight while aboard the prison ship. While in Australia, John falls deeper in love and Hannah also gains feelings for John.

The biggest flaw with this book is that I DON'T KNOW HOW ANY OF THIS HAPPENED!!! When did this love-falling happen? They never spent any TIME together in the book!!

I really liked Hannah. Her character was developed very nicely and you knew her feelings (excepting how she managed to fall in love with a man I thought she had contact with a mere handful of times!). You knew why she felt her guilt and why she couldn't overcome it.

John seemed likeable enough. It's just... well, I really didn't gain any insight into his character. I felt bad for him. I understood his rage. I didn't understand how he fell in love... and I don't know his feelings.

So, to sum up: I loved the plot. I loved the history. I liked Hannah and the secondary characters. I didn't DISLIKE John... I liked him the way I like the smiling cashier at the grocery store- for a stranger-- seems nice enough but beyond the nametag I don't know a whole lot more. I would have given this 5 stars had I just understood or believed the love connection.
Awesome, edgy story!  Oct 15, 2007
To Love Anew is an amazing journey you won't want to miss. There are some pretty edgy scenes in this book, which of course worked well for me. However, someone else may find a few things a bit hard to read because they were SO realistically done. I felt like I was Hannah suffering through the majority of the book. The stench, the pain, the heartache were all vividly portrayed. I doubt I would have survived what Hannah went through and may have given up hope long before. But Hannah was a survivor despite her low opinion of herself and the guilt that nearly consumed her.

I loved how the author took people that Hannah would not normally associate with, but given her circumstances, she is then forced to look at her own heart and prejudices. The unspeakable evils done to the prisoners amazed me in that anyone survived at all. The story reminded me of the movie Amistad, but the prisoners on the ship were white. The forced labor for the prisoners and lack of freedom was just like slavery.

John was the ultimate hero and just about made me swoon whenever he spoke to Hannah. He had plenty of reasons to be bitter, but still managed to keep his honor despite his harsh living situation. His devotion to Hannah was also commendable. I loved the tension between the two of them. Their connection felt realistic and deep. And the emotional tension between them is what excellent romance writing is all about. I loved their relationship and rooted for them to the end--as John never gave up hope.

The best part of this book (besides the delectable romance) was probably the spiritual portion. Hannah had every reason to believe God had abandoned her. She responded like any human would in a similar situation. Of course God never left her, but the journey she took toward that realization was awesome. I loved this story!
