A fledgling colony on the shores of the James River struggles desperately to survive and earn the good will of the King of England while Spanish dons, ruthless pirates, and lurking Indians plot to destroy Jamestown and its handful of colonists. Meanwhile, a simple, godly soldier braves all odds to defend his honor and his duty to uphold God's sacred laws. The brother of the Indian princess Pocahontas fights fiercely for what he believes to be true, but on whose side? An evil English nobleman, empowered by the King, will stop at nothing to gain what his heart most desires, while young Lady Jocelyn Leigh, newly arrived from the King's court, must decide whether to honor her husband and her God or bow to a King's unrighteous command. This enhanced edition of To Have and to Hold brings to life the exciting beginnings of America, weaving a story of adventure and intrigue with providence and perseverance in colonial Jamestown, while outlining the trials endured by our forefathers as they built this country. Read about swashbucklers, savages, and noblemen as fictional characters mingle with the real Jamestown leaders and colonists. Seen through the eyes of Ralph Percy, a valiant warrior protecting and cherishing his wife, his duty, and the honor of God's holy law, this story will leave you with an appreciation for the sacrifice of those who have gone before, as well as a better understanding of the history of our nation. Published in 1907 for the Jamestown tercentennial, and newly republished for its four hundredth anniversary, this expanded commemorative edition of To Have and to Hold features a new cast of characters list, chapter endnotes to help explain many little-known historical details, thirty-nine action-packed chapters, and an introduction by historian William Potter who provides an overview of the first twenty years of the Jamestown colony. Readers of all ages will enjoy this captivating tale of stirring adventure. A great family read-aloud!
1900. Johnston, an American novelist, wrote books that combine romance with history. She is chiefly remembered for To Have and to Hold, a story of colonial Virginia, and its successor, Audrey. The book begins: The work of the day being over, I sat down upon my doorstep, pipe in hand, to rest awhile in the cool of the evening. Death is not more still than is this Virginian land in the hour when the sun has sunk away, and it is black beneath the trees, and the stars brighten slowly and softly, one by one. The birds that sing all day have hushed, and the horned owls, the monster frogs, and that strange ominous fowl (if fowl it be, and not, as some assert, a spirit damned) which we English call the whippoorwill, are yet silent. Later the wolf will howl and the panther scream, but now there is no sound. The winds are laid, and the restless leaves droop and are quiet. The low lap of the water among the reeds is like the breathing of one who sleeps in his watch beside the dead. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
