Features: * The story of the Bible ... in its own words * Events, characters, and teachings of the Bible arranged chronologically After Judas left, Jesus gave the disciples a glimpse of what was to come. He foreshadowed the fact that he was going to be 'broken' and 'poured out'---he was going to take humanity's punishment for sin on himself. While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Take and eat; this is my body.' Then he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.' Jesus warned his disciples that he would be with them only a little while longer. He went on to comfort his confused followers. 'Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. My Father's house has plenty of room; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.' Thomas said to him, 'Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?' Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.'

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Great introductory tool!  Jun 29, 2010
In today's 5-minute attention span world, trying to help develop spiritual discipline with my students is difficult. Many times, they read their Bible for a couple minutes or a couple days, but inevitably, they stop doing it because there is either no immediate revelation every day that changes everything or because they simply don't understand what's going on. Where The Story really hits a home-run, is drawing the narrative line that runs through the OT, from Adam to Abraham to Isaac to Jacob to Joseph to Moses to Joshua and Saul to David to Solomon and so on. In stead of knowing fragments of stories, this really helps show how they are interconnected. Why does God command His people to kill so many people (including women and children)? It's hard to understand the answer unless you realize that it's the same reason God allowed His people to be enslaved in Egypt for 400 years because the sin of the Amorites was not yet complete (Gen 15:13-16).
And so it's things like this that make The Story so valuable. We can sit there and try to explain things about God to our students, but they will never be able to comprehend or appreciate any of it until they read for themselves how over and over God showed His mercy, how over and over He demonstrated His power, how again and again His justice and holiness were displayed.
I would definitely recommend this book, with one caveat (and it goes along with another comment here), that this is intended as a STARTING POINT and is not meant to substitute for a complete Bible. Reading through this book shouldn't take more than a couple months, but hopefully after you've finished, you have a desire and more background understanding, for reading God's Word. This isn't meant to be used in Bible Study (certainly though you could have some great discussion with it as a launch pad), but this is not a full Bible by any means. I'm curious myself as to why Job isn't included, or Jonah or Hosea, all narrative stories that I feel could have been included at least in some fashion (I suppose maybe because they are a break from the main story? I also should point that I haven't read this new version, and it says that there are updates, so I don't know if they've included any of these three books or not). Anyways, like I said, it's not the Bible, so don't expect it to be. But it is a wonderful starting place for someone looking to develop a quiet time and a habit of reading the Bible.

Great way to introduce the bible.  May 4, 2010
If you have had a desire to read the Bible and have even made attempts, but struggled to stick with it, the Story helps with its novel approach. (I think I read that on the cover but after reading it I agree) Anyway it was easy to read. It's pretty much the Bible told in historical order from creation through Jesus birth and resurection to revelations. Of course it includes all the classic stories from the old & new testiment, but as an ongoing novel. There was a few areas where I thought it slowed down a bit to keep the the story close to the Bible. For me it answered many questions I had because many of the stories I ve heard growing up never seamed to be tied together. But here it becomes all part of one big story and the connection between stories becomes clear. Many things just make more sense now.

PART of The Story  Apr 5, 2010
Book group selection for liberal Episcopal church. The Story is accessible and readible, and elicits some interesting discussion. But the bare bones approach moves along a bit like a 7th grade text book, all the "meat" gone (and a lot of the edgier Bibles stories--whre is Job, for instance?). It may provoke me to go on to read the actual BOOK. Good place to start, but definitely not the whole story on which Christianity is based.

A New Way to Read the Bible  Feb 3, 2010
The Story makes it so easy to read the Bible. Don't expect the text to follow other versions word-for-word. This translation cuts out the ... begat ...., etc. so one doesn't get bogged down in verbiage. It's written without verse indexing so it's a bit hard to cross reference the text with another translation, but this is a minor problem compared to the merits of the book.

Great product!  Feb 1, 2010
I am almost half way through the book! Even though I have a seminary degree, I have been reminded of so many useful principles because of THE STORY. I pick it up every morning to "discover" more truth!

Good, but parts missing  Dec 30, 2009
OKAY BIBLE NOVEL, BUT I DONT CARE FOR THE NIV VERSION. MAYBE A BIBLE NOVEL WITH THE MESSAGE EDITION.
