Item Description...
David, Xander, Dad, and Keal discover that Taksidian wants their house for himself in order to use the time portals to build an empire, and unless they can find his weakness in time, the future of the world itself may be in danger.

Publishers Description

Which door would you go through to save the world?

David, Xander, and Toria King never know what new adventures--and dangers--await them beyond the mysterious portals hidden on the top floor of their new house. They have battled gladiators and the German army, dodged soldiers on both sides of the Civil War, and barely escaped a fierce attack in their own home.

Still they are no closer to finding their mother, who was pulled by powerful forces through a portal and lost in time.

Their only hope is to turn the tables on Taksidian, the menacing stranger who wants them out of the house so he can use it for his own twisted purposes.

But everything changes when a trip into the near future reveals the devastating outcome of Taksidian's schemes--a destroyed city filled with mutant creatures. It is only then that the Kings realizeAwhat they're really fighting for--the fate of humanity itself.

OUTATIME  Apr 15, 2010
Intriguing premise undone by all too clever gimmick.

The intriguing premise is having our heroes live in a house full of time portals; the gimmick is having each book cover a single 24 hour time period. As a result, our heroes spend half of their time in a state of steadily increasing exhaustion due to everything that is continually coming at them, which might not be so bad if they didn't spend the other half of their time complaining about how exhausted they are!

Other reviewers have complained about the lack of character development, but that is unfortunately the inevitable consequence of the gimmick. Seriously, how much could someone's character develop in only 24 hours? (Revealing character is another matter, but there isn't much room for that, either.) Others have complained about the lack of references to Christianity in what is supposed to be an overtly Christian book, but again the gimmick is to blame. A hurriedly offered prayer, a short Bible quote, a quick moral lesson is about all anyone in this book has time for. Heck, at this rate we won't even get around to Sunday (again?) until book SEVEN (if there ever is one)!

Note: There is a warning at the beginning to read House of Dark Shadows, Watcher in the Woods, and Gatekeepers before reading this book and going on to read Whirlwind and Frenzy, which is no doubt good advice. I believe I was able to pick up the thread by the end, but that certainly wouldn't be the preferred way to sample this series.

Too bad. IMHO Robert Liparulo is clearly a talented writer, but he attempted a gimmick too far.
Awesome series of books  Mar 11, 2010
This is book number 4 in a series. I did not realize it was part of a series when I received the book. I opened the cover and in bold type it said Stop and do not continue until you have read the first 3 books. So, I ordered the other 3 books and have read them all in the past week. The books are very uniquely written. Time travel, adventure, and full of suspense. It was very hard to put the books down. My fourteen year old daughter and my 19 year old son have also read the books and throughly enjoyed them. These books appeal to a wide age group. I am thinking it maybe a bit to suspensful for my 10 year old. Mr. Liparulo awesome job!!! Looking forward to reading all of his books.

Customer review from the this site Vine(tm) Program (What's this?)
The King children are growing up right before our eyes - but, I guess running for your life every time you enter a door in your own home would make you grow up pretty quick! Family values, strong moral character and subtle Christian concepts are mixed with historical settings and lots of action - the result... a good read!

Still holding his creative cards close to the vest, Liparulo lures us deeper into the house and ever closer to the King Family. Throughout Timescape the search for Mom continues and the kids are feeling more desperate with each failed attempt. Even though there's danger lurking everywhere we are introduced to new friends along the way...Keal, Jessee's caretaker quickly becomes a strong ally and the source of much needed support. Although they continue to demonstrate a resolve, dedication and loyalty far beyond their tender years, the dangers feel closer than ever before...and even more serious. And they couldn't be more right! Taksidian will stop at nothing to get them out of the old house and they will soon come to understand there's much more at stake than their address ~ much, much more!

As has been pointed out by others, where we were left hanging at the end of book three, Liparulo scoops us up and takes off like a streak of lightning. Unlike other books where the opening chapters are dedicated to recapping previous installments, Liparulo starts anew from sentence one, for this reason I suggest reading the books in order. *As always, parents should utilize their own judgment when selecting titles - based on your child's maturity, fears and reading level. The narrative describes severed body parts and other gory references that some may find objectionable or inappropriate.*
Almost Unreadable Unless You're A Fan  Dec 24, 2009
Be forewarned that jumping into the middle of this series, "The Dreamhouse Kings," is guaranteed to be an exercise in pure frustration. To be fair, that is true of other series as well, but it's so extreme in this case that this latest book, "Timescape," the fourth in the saga, is virtually unreadable unless you're a fan who has followed the action carefully up to this point.

That is not to say that the book is good in its own right; it isn't anything of the sort. While the prose is sometimes decent enough, the whole premise--- which I finally understood after reading well over a third of the book--- probably seems ridiculous even to the young adult audience at which the series is seemingly aimed. There is the King family, and they are in this house that contains portals to other worlds. The house seems to have a mind of its own, and then there is the arch villain who wants the house for himself and tries to drive the King family away. Said family would probably leave on their own except their Mom is missing, lost in one of those worlds beyond the house. Oh ... I shouldn't forget, if you go into a second floor closet, you are transported to ... the children's middle school. Really.

The book opens with the family (less Mom, of course) on the run from some savage creatures in one of those other worlds. They make it home but then get pulled back in, and end up on the Titanic just as it's sinking. The book does improve a little from here--- it can't possibly get worse--- but not enough so to redeem the effort.

Nearly every chapter ends on a mini-cliffhanger. The chapters are very short, I guess to cater to assumed short attention spans. In this, author Liparulo shows little respect for his readers, making some rather poor assumptions as to what he thinks will entertain young adults; and of course the book ends on a very big cliffhanger. You'll just have to buy the next book ... and the next.

And the height of pretension: at the end of the book there is a reading group guide, with discussion questions, including, "What is your favorite Bible verse and why?" This rates another "really."

Unless you're alread deep into the series and simply must know what happens next, pass this book up. There are a lot of good young adult choices that better deserve your attention and cash.
Too much dialogue and action, not enough story for my taste  Dec 17, 2009
Too much dialogue and action, not enough story for my taste, but if this is what you are looking for the book is a great read. And you do need to start with book one in a series. It is not something you should start from book 3 or 4. Also, I would not say it was written complex enough for young adults to read as this site lists it, it is more of a middle school read in my opinion.
