Effective Time Management  Dec 15, 2005
Time Difference is a delightful little book packed with wisdom and advice on how one should effectively use one's time. Although the author focuses on those who want to know God and what God says about time and one's life, the ideas and principles expounded in this book are universally applicable.

The author explains that time begins when one is born and ends when we die. Hence the importance of knowing why we live in the first place before we die. Time passes and cannot be stopped or reversed. Trying to live in the past is useless and pointless. The past is critical as far as we learn from it. The future is a reference point which, however, cannot be guaranteed. The present is the most important referent point as it is the time that we truly have. What we do with it determines our future. Hence the need to make the right choices and avoid wasting time and our lives. The author clearly shows that the present is a gift from the creator which must be effectively utilized for a better future.

Muleya presents seven basic facts about time which make a lot of sense and can be summarised as follows:

* Time is life. We have a short time on earth and we must accomplish our mission within it.
* Time is money. We need to use the time and talents that God has given us to create wealth and money.
* Time is short. We all have our time allocation in this world and we should not expect any extensions.
* Time passes quickly. It is therefore essential to make the right choices while we are still living.
* Time is an equal opportunity employer. We all have the same allocation of time on any given period. No one is favoured.
* Time has an opportunity cost. The opportunity cost of time is the activities forgone. If one unwisely wastes his/her time, this time will not be recovered. One needs to be prepared to pay the price for what one chooses.
* Time must be planned. We need to plan our day, week month, year etc.

The author spells out seven principles of effective time management. If we follow these daily throughout our lives, then we can be sure to use our allotted time on earth productively. We should be able to achieve our objectives. On our deathbeds, we should be able to look back with pride at our accomplishments on earth. These seven principles cited by the author for effective time management are:

* Set goals. This is the first critical step and we need to be clear about where we are going.
* Learn to set priorities. Important things contribute towards the achievement of our goals.
* Live one day at a time. One should avoid aiming for quick gains as this is littered with pitfalls.
* We should aim for effectiveness first and efficiency second. Effectiveness is doing the right things and efficiency is doing things right.
* Learn to say no tactfully and firmly. In this case, we should learn to say no to assignments and activities that are not aligned to our priorities.
* Learn to delegate. Since we cannot do everything, we need to team up with others.
* Get rid of junk. This is the case at work, family situation and everything else we do.

The author gives advice on how to manage one's day so that we use the time effectively and productively. Among the essential advice given include the need to save some quiet time, allocating and protecting prime time, developing diligence and concentration, taking breaks, striving for closure, ending the work day with a review and planning and investing in exercise and sleep.

The author also gives the reader information about the seven vices of time management namely failure to concentrate; fire-fighting (living in a state of perpetual crisis); switching (habit of getting something partly done and then getting side tracked and drifting into something else); perfectionism (an uncompromising pursuit of excellence); indecision; acquiescence (grudgingly accepting unnecessary assignments from other people) and rehashing (tendency to dwell in the past).

Cornwell Muleya did a wonderful job of coming up with a book that should be very helpful to all those who need to make the best use of the limited time allocated to them on earth. The book is easy to read and can be completed in a short time. I read most of the book during a long layover at some airport waiting for a connecting flight. This turned out to be a very informative and productive use of my time. The book is small enough to fit into a handbag or jacket pocket.
