Overview
While there are many studies and commentaries on the book of Acts, few focus on the amazing achievement of the people found within its narrative. The first Christians chronicled in Acts turned the world upside down in the space of a generation. In this book, Michael Green opens up the gripping story of Acts, highlighting the volcanic eruption of faith described there and comparing it to the often half-hearted Christianity of the modern Western world. Combing trusted scholarship with a popular, enjoyable writing style, this is an ideal book for church, group, or personal study. Green explores the life and faith of the Christians of Acts, answering such questions as What kind of people were they? How did they live? and How did they organize and practice as members of the new church? Besides unveiling the nature of life in the early church, Green discusses how we today can apply the first Christians' dynamic efforts at church planting, pastoral care, social concerns, gospel proclamation, and prayer.

Publishers Description
While there are many studies and commentaries on Acts, few focus on the staggering achievement of the people found within its narrative. The first Christians chronicled in the book of Acts turned the world upside down in the space of a generation. In this book Michael Green opens up the gripping story of Acts, highlighting the astonishing, volcanic eruption of faith found there and comparing it to the often half-hearted Christianity of the modern Western world.

In the course of this frank and insightful survey, Green explores the life and faith of the Christians of Acts, answering key questions raised at the start of each chapter, such as What kind of people were they? How did they live? and How did they organize and practice as members of the new church? After unveiling the nature of life in the early church, Green turns his eye to contemporary times, asking how we today can apply and learn from the first Christians' dynamic efforts at church founding, pastoral care, social concern, gospel proclamation, and prayer.

Combining trusted scholarship with a popular -- indeed enjoyable -- writing style, "Thirty Years That Changed the World will be ideal for classroom, church, or group study.

Thirty Years that Changed the World - Book Review  Jan 6, 2008
Green addresses the various aspects of the first thirty years of Christianity - the people, the society they lived in, their ministry, church planting, their spirit-led life, and others. Christians and churches today are so different from how they were back then. There is a lot we can learn from these first century Christians. The Acts of the Apostles is relevant to the twenty-first century. This book isn't just another commentary on Acts. It is a guide for an authentic, Holy Spirit-led Christian life.

Green describes the world that the first century Christians lived in. He describes the culture, and what the political, social, and economic climate was like. They had to deal with opposition and pressure from the secular society, weaknesses from within the church, and of course, direct satanic opposition.

A major strength of this book is Green's clear description of the character qualities of these early Christians and their ability to proclaim the gospel so effectively. Luke and his colleagues were humble, intelligent, compassionate men and women of prayer. In the midst of opposition and hostility, they were cohesive and encouraging to one another. They were open and obedient to the Holy Spirit. Green states that their authentic Christian lifestyles reflected dedication, enthusiasm, joy, faith, endurance, holiness, power, generosity, and prayer will greatly impact any culture.

Green also goes in depth on the subject of apologetics, providing various examples on how early Christians did it in Acts. For example, Paul's style was to enter into his audiences' mindset, becoming "all things to all people". In this way, he is able to show their need for Christ in a way they can understand.

Another strength of this book is how Green describes the early church. He looks at seven major churches that were founded in Acts, and what made them effective. They were oriented outward towards spreading the gospel. They relied completely on the Holy Spirit in their leadership and decision making process. Those who came to faith were nurtured properly. They took care of those in need. They provided warm fellowship and true worship. They provided regular instruction of the scriptures.

Even though the Acts of the Apostles took place in the first century A.D., you see clearly how timeless this book is. If you want to know authentic Christianity in a fresh way, you have to read this book.

Thirty Years That Changed the World  Oct 27, 2007
Michael Green is masterful at describing the lives, trials, triumphs and even the thought patterns of the early Christians. One would be tempted to believe the author was an eye-witness, so clearly and succinctly is the story told. Easy to read with wonderful insights into the era of the Acts of the Apostles.

Encourages a faith with both brains and heart  Sep 19, 2005
One caveat is that this book is written by an evangical scholar for evangelicals...if you're looking for a more academic discussion, something along the lines of Wayne Meeks' "The First Urban Christians" might be more your speed. What Michael Green gives us, however, is a historically informed discussion that brings the Bible, and the world of early Christians, to life. This work is excellent. It is worthwhile scholarship and practical Christian-Life reading rolled into one, and written for the non-academic.
