Awareness, Responsibility, Confessing, Replace bad traits with Spiritual habit  Feb 1, 2006
If beauty is defined as wholeness, harmony and radiance then Thinking With The Heart, by Horace Allen, is a profoundly beautiful book. It answers pleas of need for the human condition. The book's premise is recognition that the human heart is the center of being. The book's controversy is that the mind and the body are aspects of the human heart. The book's passion is recognition that God embraces the human heart.

The beauty of the premise of Thinking With The Heart is a prolific flow of information, which will inevitably change the scope of modern psychological inquiry. Dr. Allen has discovered that the heart is central to understanding the human condition. The etymology of his revelation is dutifully and reverently acquired over the course of his career counseling broken families, spiritual leadership to those in crisis and direction to lost souls. The author is a man of God. Educated first as an Engineer he has a sense of structure necessary to the formation of abstract knowledge (viz: The Human Heart), he studied Family Counseling and Divinity. His credentials are solid: he is a practicing Family Therapist; he has a degree in Psychology, an M.S. in Family Therapy and he is long standing Pastor at the East End Baptist Church, in Brooklyn New York. His wisdom is a certain and constant course of thinking and doing; Horace Allen is a wise man... he is here to stay, and he is going to tell the world what he has found.

The beauty of the book's controversy is that it cures the confusion of modern day psychological data. Psychology, a relatively new science, attempts to lessen the burdens of the problematic human condition by explaining the psyche and conforming the psyche to aspects of experience, nature, environment and trauma. Modern Psychology attempts to explain the mind in various theories of human behavior. It is a social science with a secular premise, but that premise seems hollow and subject to conversions of theory in economic, ethical and traumatic empiricism. Modern psychology is "mind" centered. Horace Allen's work shifts the mind-centered patterns to the heart, to centered patterns of human divinity. The heart is the epic of the Human condition. Allen's shift from mind to heart is a refinement of our vision, rather than, as so many anxious psychologists have theorized over the past 300 years, as a process and product of secular ideals. Horace Allen is not waiting for the answer; he has the answer, he has read the Bible, read Freud Jung, Erikson, Pavlov and Vygotsky...he has listened to thousands of yearnings from those in need. His truth is now, not in yet-to-be unfolded complexities.
The beauty of the book's passion is work formed on an imitation of Christ. Thinking With The Heart prescribes that God's law is written on the heart. Jesus knew, viscerally, that Gods law is written on the heart and Jesus intrinsically referenced the immaterial heart to the physical world and promised salvation - demonstrated love, sacrificed his material body for the lives of our soul. And Jesus is now. The same defective world that he walked is our world. Microwaves and rocket ships have not changed the human condition, what was then, is now, and will be forever. Dr. Allen is a Christian man importing 30 years of wisdom; yet, as Jesus lives in Horace Allen this book should not be categorized as a text for Christian schools only, to do so would be against true Christian ideal. Thinking With The Heart is ready for prime time. The secular world must embrace Horace Allen as a national treasure whose work has only begun. Horace Allen has postponed, wisely I believe, entrance of his work into public scrutiny until now, yet his book, whether it heals souls or shifts inquiry of the intellectual will inevitably serve the entire community of humanity; the religious and the secular alike and leave the world hungry for more of his grounded, deeply rooted truth.

There is peace in the principles of the book. A broken heart can find its mend by following the deeply rooted structures of "Heart Therapy" i.e.: Awareness, Responsibility, Confession/Forgiveness and a pattern of healthy habit assure that peace. Human misery and suffering create need. Thinking With The Heart heals the needy, guides the searchers and fold us all into God's grace.
BADLY MISSES THE MARK!!!  Mar 26, 2005
Unfortunately, this is just another one of those countless "quasi-biblical" Christian self-help books which quote just enough Scripture to appear as if they are sincerely rooted in the Word but will sadly only confuse most or at least prove to be a terrible time waster if you have days to wade through it with discernment and your Bible close at hand.

Most striking is the profound lack of even a rudimentary concept of the believer's need to rely upon and seek after the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in their life as a necessity for true change.

This work is hopelessly marred by countless inconsistencies in Mr. Allen's psychological worldview, it will leave you shaking your head if not your fist. This shouldn't surprise you given Mr. Allen's lack of relevant credentials, he is not accredited by either CCEF, NANC, or any other Christian counseling institute,-- which is very troubling considering the subject matter in which he would have us believe he is expert.

Furthermore, his only education in psychology is that of an undergrad and his counseling education rises only to that of a Masters degree and both are limited to purely secular curriculums at secular universities.

This however has not discouraged his creative invention of a number of novel terms to describe the human condition/nature which at first look appear to bear some insight but unfortunately prove to be nothing more than another "new-agey" worldly reiteration of unbiblical concepts once you understand exactly how he means these terms in the context of his personal theology. The "mish-mash" of anecdotal and case-study type accounts are a misguided attempt to bulk up the book's otherwise confusing pages.

This self-published tome is an all too obvious effort at self-promotion serving more as a glorified advertisement for Mr. Allen's counseling practice than a sincere work of educating God's people.

Skip this one, it's just not worth wading through 360 pages of flawed theology and overly secular "psycho-babble".
