Item Description...
"Parishes have since the 1960s fashioned a new model of parish: not that of pastor and assistants with sisters in the school but a model of circles of ministry around the pastor," states Thomas O'Meara. His Theology of Ministry, now revised and updated, brings readers up to date on this shift from biblical, historical, and theological perspectives. O'Meara presents a fundamental and cultural theology of ministry organized around the following subjects: Ch. 1 The context of ministry Ch. 2 The origins of ministry in the work of Jesus Ch. 3 The metamorphoses of ministry through the centuries Chs. 4-5 Ministry and ministers today Chs. 6-7 Ideas on the sources and spirituality of ministry Clearly written and packed with new material that makes it highly relevant for today's participants in ministry, both lay and clergy, this work is a must for seminaries, colleges, lay-ministry training centers, and diaconate training programs. Its broadly considered theology of ministry will make this a classic like its predecessor.

Theology of Ministry  May 7, 2007
The book was received almost immediately after purchase! The condition was perfect.
Walk the walk like Jesus  Feb 17, 2006
First written in 1983, this book was considerably revised and expanded. As a book after the Vatican II, the author constantly referred the subject matter to the practices of early Christians who replaced much of the 'religious activities' with community, charism, and service. "A theory of ministry a theology of the Holy Spirit, a contemplative analysis of grace." The author is not afraid to put 'religion'to tasks by highlighting the external, cultic, tribal, and superfical aspect of religion.
Today when certain members of the Catholic Church want to go back to 'those good old days' by promoting Latin Masses and the conservative theologies associated with it, this book belongs to the enlightened or progressive camp. Despite the arrangement of the contents which could have been more organized and condensed, and the random terminologies which could have been spared -since the target readers are more practitioners (pastoral ministers) than theological students, this book provides many insights, modern perspective on religion, spirituality, grace and the central meaning of the New Testaments. Unfortunately, as an ordained priest, the author did not address the thorny issue of clericalism and judicialism that are important parameters in the field of professional pastoral minstry.
A synopsis of the state of ministry today  Sep 30, 2001
Father O'Meara presents a survey of the state of ministry in the church in a manner to be understood easily, so that it appears simple, yet is a profound insight into the needs and directions of the Church today. Its a fairly easy read and a good text for anyone interested in Christian ministry, ecclesiology, or theology in general.
Groundbreaking work  May 4, 2001
This book presents a very solid and eye opening theology of ministry for the Church. O'Meara develops his theology by examining the history and theology of ministry in Church. This book is an absolute must for those involved in ministry.
